Question about Manix 2 lightweight stiffness to open
Question about Manix 2 lightweight stiffness to open
I got a used Manix 2 LW (blue) and a Tenacious today. I'm thoroughly impressed with the Tenacious (despite hating liner locks). The Manix, however, seems incredibly stiff to open/close.
I'm not talking about the CBB lock; with the lock fully disengaged the blade still seems quite stiff. With my regular Manix 2 if I pull the lock back all the way the blade will swing freely. This is the complete opposite.
Is this normal? Is it just a consequence of the rivet construction? I wouldn't have guessed so since the blade is clearly not contacting the frame.

All God's critters have knives.
I have also found this to be the case with my black lightweight version - perhaps it's the result of the bushings they have used? In any case I have found that I do get used to it after a while.

Mine has the same symptoms, but none of my M2s is as smooth as my first, the 154CM. I'm wondering if its because this one had a solid year in the pocket to break in, so I'm not passing judgement yet.

I have a blue lightweight and the action definitely gets a little looser with time (hopefully it won't get too loose because I have the pinned version!) I am generally not a flicker, but if you disengage the lock you can flick it open without touching the blade. It will not drop open or closed, which I sort of like.
I also have two blacked out Manix2s and used to have a regular Manix2 and Manix XL... the blades on all of them drop open and closed if you disengage the lock.

My Black LW came perfect. This knife continues to impress me every time I pick it up. So light, so solid, so smoooth.

I always had trouble with the lock on M2. A month ago I was able to handle on show M2 blue LW. Lock and action were buttery smooth. Last Tuesday I got my own black M2 LW, it is even better fresh out of the box. This is all what I can say.

I found that after one week of constant use the knife became much easier to open and close. So perhaps you can open and close your knife repeatedly while browsing this forum :Dzhyla wrote:Thanks guys. So should I expect this to just wear in? Anything I can do to hurry it along.

When I get a stiff knife, I simply open and close it over and over and over while doing something
else or sitting around. In a short while you can simulate a years worth of opening and closing.
most will loosen up after a while, although there are a few that are naturally more tight.
Try the Tuff or Szabo folder for instance, but I have got both to where they work just fine for me.

Today I tried adjusting the pivot screw on my Manix 2 LW and found that with a very slight amount of adjustment counter-clockwise I could get it to where the blade swings freely with the lock disengaged. It was a *very* small adjustment - less than 1/8th of a turn, so perhaps you can experiment with that.
Personally I felt that it was dangerous to have the blade that loose because of the possibility of it swinging onto my fingers due to forgetfulness or inattention, so I have tightened it to the point where the blade will just barely stay in place with the lock disengaged. Then all it needs is a gentle shake to open or close. The advantage of this amount of tension is that it makes the knife really easy to flick open, and the way it snaps into place is quite addictive now: *BAM!* :D

Ah, you must have one of the older ones - mine is a 2013 model and they have changed to a screwed pivot, although the rest of the handle is still pinned.zhyla wrote:There is no pivot screw on the Manix 2 Lightweight.

I prefer my knives this way. Ty washing your knife in warm soapy water. Rinse with clean water, use canned air (keyboard duster) to remove the rest of the water. Oil very lightly. A loose knife like that feels flimsy to me, and especially one that is pinned. Kind of like buying new tires, and doing burnouts and donuts for 3-4 days to "break them in". I've been working this thing back and forth for a bit, it's improving and it's usable but seems like a lot of friction.
