Any info on the vesuvius

I went to my local knife shop in the mall this evening and found a blue inlay vesuvius for sale at 175$. just wondering if anyone knows about it and if thats a good price. Also any info on how to make sure its not fake.

Can't tell you what they sell for these days, they are long discontinued, but I have a Vesusius and like it a lot. Slim blade cuts very well. Lightweight. Smooth scales are very comfortable to use. First ever (iirc?) comp lock. Not as thick as say the Para comp lock, but it does fine.

Much like a Cento in many ways but the lock makes it more special, IMO.

Mine isn't one of the Paua shell inlays, it has a silver spyder in the scale.



I'd buy it, if I didn't have one.

To the best if my knowledge, there has never been a fake Vesuvius, so I'd say the chances of the one you're interested in being legit are about as good as they get. The Vesuvius was the first compression lock model and, as with any new technology, it had some teething pains. More of a collectors piece than a user, given that you can get the midlock version of it, the Centofante III, for around $60 from just about any online dealer. The only versions I'd consider paying that kind of money for would be the 2002 Spyderco Forum Vesuvius and the brown shell inlaid version (assuming any of those ever actually were made) but that's just me.

Here's my Vesuvius. I was very lucky to pick this up from an auction for $37. I would've paid more, but no one else bid! The lock on mine seems to work ok, but it's mainly a collection piece for me.

It's probably unlikely, but I would LOVE to see a sprint of this knife with some improvements to the lock. That would probably be enough to warrant a new model though, so probably never happen.

Not sure as a collector acquisition. Buying for a user the Centofante3 is for all intents and purposes a similar knife minus a few touches. I would probably (personally) save the $110 and get the lockback evolution.

I've handled a couple of these at shows and dealers. While I'm a huge compression lock fan - I've never picked up a Vesuvius. Every time I've worked the action one of them, it felt a little... rough... and not quite together. Like Deacon said... teething pains.

The '02 Forum knife would be a great find though...

I just picked up a Vesuvius with the blue inlays like the one in the earlier picture, it is made in Colorado ATS34 and has 913 on it. I don't have the box but it came from a collector and appears to have never been used. Does anyone know what it is worth? I am new to this forum but just bought 5 discontinued Spyerco's.
