Krein regrind

Post by grg »

I'm considering getting my Southard reground by Tom Krein,as I think the blade is just to thick to be a great slicer. It did come very sharp from the factory, but I know it can be improved. So what do you spyderco nuts think, should I,or shouldn't I.

I thought that Tom Krein stopped doing regrinds awhile back. I am sure that he did for awhile because I recall that he wanted to focus on knife-making versus regrinding. He may be back up and running on the regrinding thing - you would have to check. Just an fyi for you.

I am generally not too excited about regrinds but from what I have seen of the blade thickness on the Southard, I'd say it would be a great candidate. Let us know (with pics, of course) if you get it done.

I traded emails with Tom less than a month ago and he is not currently doing regrinds. He did not give the impression he had any plans of opening that door again. I will mention that I had Brad Southard do two regrinds for me and they came out nicely. Perhaps contact Brad directly about the blade thickness reduction. I do not remember his fee, but I do not remember it being very expensive. The finish on the Southard regrinds I ordered was to a higher grit finish than the Krein regrinds I have in my collection. I'll see if I can get some pictures together when my family gets back from MA.

I confirmed with Tom at the Blade Show that he's not doing any more regrinds for the foreseeable future.

If memory serves me well, Steve at STR (famous for his titanium clips) also does regrinds on occasion. It might be worth dropping him a line.
