What is my Native worth? Can you tell me about it?
What is my Native worth? Can you tell me about it?
Hey everyone!
I'm new to the forum, but a long time knife enthusiast. I've just recently gotten into collecting quality knives (past 2 yrs or so) because now I can actually afford to save up for some. Spyderco is definitely my favorite knife maker! Several years ago I purchased this custom engraved Spyderco Native:http://www.flickr.com/photos/95900527@N ... 588534385/ I really don't know too much about it. I'm curious as to what year this knife was made, what it could be worth, and any other information anyone is willing to share on it. I'd like to know if I should keep this in the collection, or sell/trade it for another knife I really want.
Thanks,
Mark

Flickr is having issues at the moment, so I can't see the pictures to comment on. But I just wanted to welcome you to the forum and hope you enjoy your stay here! :)
Once Flickr is back up and running (they say they're aware of the issue), I'm sure someone will come along shortly and help provide the answer you're looking for. If not, I'll check back in the morning when I wake up and see if I can't help out.

The Native II was probably the least popular version of the Native and the part serrated AUS-10 Native II was the most common version of that model, having been produced from 1998 to 2007, so collector interest would be minimal. MSRP was roughly $100 in 2007, so street price new would have been in the $60-$70 range. I doubt the value of a NIB specimen will have increased beyond that, at least not by much. How much value engraving, or any other form of embellishment, adds to the value of a knife is harder to assess. As an example, the orientation of the goose on your Native seems wrong to me. On a knife, animals are usually portrayed "right side up" when the knife is open and held normally in the hand.

Welcome to the forum MFitz, I'm new here as well.
I can only see the thumbnails pictures at the moment, but I'm curious, could you please write here the sentence engraved on the clip?

The way I put pictures on the forum are these steps:
1. Copy pic from camera to pc.
2. reduce MB to 100 or less (usually between 85MB and 98MB)
3. copy reduced sized picture to a picture album in my profile on the forum. Click on your user ID at the top of the page to access your albums and other things.
4. Open the picture and copy the bottom of the two URLs.
5. Switch to the thread window you are replying to and paste the link there.
This felt like a pain when I first started but now I do it quickly. I just got used to the steps. :D This may not be the easiest way or the best way either but it works. If you want to try this and have questions please ask. My "steps" may not be clear.

It's not really a sentence, just a US patent number and a couple "patent pending" declarations. But it does put the knife (or at least the clip) in the earlier half of the production run, as the info changed, then disappeared, over the years.ominodipietra wrote:Welcome to the forum MFitz, I'm new here as well.

I think the issue is not so much as "what is it worth?" but "what is it worth to you?"
If it is worth less to you than another knife then sell it. If not, keep it.
As for what to sell it for, a new Native with S30V and FRN is about $70-80 on eBay. I wouldn't expect any more than that, and probably less (although, that said, some bidders are weird). To be honest, if it were me I'd keep it. The knife itself might not be particularly collectable (and I don't like serrations), but the engraving makes it unique.
