People noticing your blades?

#1

Post by Bradley »

I was in class (smfg 160) the other day and some guy noticed my Orange Dodo. It made me happy that other people appreciate good blades. He pulled out a Sebenza 21 and let me handle it. Anyone else get satisfaction from strangers pointing out their knives?

ps. if that guy is on this forum, hit me up in class, let's be friends!

An orange knife would be hard not to spot. :)

An make sure that the wrong people don't spot it, ya know, the ones with
sticky fingers. and there are others, believe it or not, that don;t appreciate
a "weapon" in public view. (I don't worry much about them though).

I wonder if a person could write "cheat notes" on small piece of paper
and stick it to the blade of a knife. I'm just sayin'.

I went to a family get-together on my wife's side about a week ago and her uncle happened to notice me opening a box with my pm2 and asked to see it. He's been a casual knife collector for a while and fell in love with it.. I ended up showin him a few of my other spydercos and now he's very interested. I gifted him a centofante 3 to start his spydie collection. Sounds like he's been bitten!

I love this game. I always look at the corners of people's pockets for clips. I was pretty good at identifying a knife brand and model just by the clip. When I see that lovely little bug, it warms my heart. I have only been bold enough to approach these fellow knife lovers a few times to some positive reception.

The ones in my pockets are almost always carried so they're totally invisible, but some of my more observant guests have noticed there are a few in my living room...

I tend to be very reserved in the public sphere regarding knives. If its a few people at a friends house that's fine but it seems that others tend to be louder verbally and physically. Combined with the polarizing subject I tend shy from those talks.

That's just me and my insecurities tho! No offense intended :) .

I'm usually the guy doing the noticing. A couple weeks ago I was at the dentist sitting in the waiting room when a guy came in. As he was standing talking to the receptionist, the shine of a pocket clip caught my eye. This clip was of a very particular shape and had a round hole cut out of it...and once I spotted the smurf blue handle color, I knew there was a Yojimbo lurking in his pocket. When he sat down I asked if he had a Yojimbo in his pocket and he looked really surprised that I knew what it was. We exchanged knives for a minute and talked blades for about a half hour before I had to go in. When I left the receptionist gave me a business card with his number on the back. I haven't had a chance to call him yet.

Paul, I'm pretty sure a blind man would notice 100+ Kiwis in your livingroom ;)

Great story. I could approach a stranger easier if I saw that Spyderhole
sticking out of a pocket.

I showed a co-worker how to open a knife using the spyderhole on my Meerkat. A few weeks later she told me her husband was quite impressed with her ability to open his new Spydie (not sure which one).

Few Appreciate Quality Where I live

#12

Post by JD Spydo »

From the time I started working this job I have at this present time my boss was always wanting to borrow one of my EDC Spyders for all kinds of jobs. So I finally persauded him to make the plunge and indeed he did>> his first Spyder was a ZDP-189 Delica that I got for him. That was about 30 models ago. I sure made a lasting impression on my boss who up till then had never heard of Spyderco but loved good quality knives.

Actually it sort of behooves me when I try to explain to some of the airheads I meet during my daily tasks that tell me that they can buy the same quality at a local flea market ( SUPER FLEA Kansas City, MO USA). But I have successfully converted 2 of the guys here who now have some excellent Spyders for their daily use.

Actually I have very few people notice the knives I carry daily. I was even questioned by the KCMO Police recently and they didn't even notice that I had 3 Spyders on me  But I did go ahead and show them my Ayoob C-60 Sprint model and they were blown away. They were big Surefire flashlight fans but didn't even have a clue when it came to good knives. But I told them where they could get some and they did write it down.

The RIP-Mart refugees in this area pretty much concentrate on what is the cheapest unfortunately and few people around here seem aroused by good quality merchandise of any kind. And it's sad because high quality is much cheaper in the very long run and sort of an investment to boot.

I was in my local gun store/range purchaseing a Glock 23 and one of the workers noticed my pocket clip. He came up to me and said, "Spyderco huh" with a grin. I had my blue m390 Para2 on me and He had an Emerson on him. We sat there and talked about knives while I was filling out gun paperwork. I run into him every once in a while at the gun store/range.
