Just handled a Military for the first time...

#1

Post by kennethsime »

A customer brought one in and I think I'll have to pick one up. Eventually. Love that blade, although the handle is a little large (larger than I thought anyway, feels a bit excessive although what do I know?). This is only the second or third Golden Spydie I've handled, and was probably the nicest. Feels better than any of the blue brand or low tolerance knives I've handled (smoother action, firmer lockup, higher strength-to-weight ratio, FFG that I love, spyderhole).

Sal and crew, I am once again thoroughly impressed. Thank you.

P.S. The customer brought it in because he was worried about the detent. It seems every third or fourth flick closed the detent is significantly stronger than on other closes, making the blade difficult to deploy. Anyone have any ideas as to what could be causing this? He was flicking it open with his middle finger, and seemed to think this could have been the problem (if this was putting excessive force on the knife or something).
I'm happiest with Micarta and Tool Steel.

Top four in rotation: K390 + GCM PM2, ZCarta Shaman, Crucarta PM2, K390 + GCM Straight Spine Stretch.

The Ti Military is my favorite Spyderco. I like it even more with the CPM-M4 and M390 blades transplanted in them :)

Was out on my regular mini-weekend hike today and the Military is my constant cold-weather companion. The size and ergos make it one of the few knives I can reliably use with semi-numb fingers. :)

My all time fav! I think the handle shrinks after you've carried one for awhile. My first one some 17 years ago seemed huge, nowadays is a regular EDC sized knife!

Echoing the others, the Millie is one of my favorite knives as well.

Not sure about the detent matter. I would think that the force exerted by the finger or the way the blade is opened would not affect it in that way. Could be knife mechanics but who am I to guess.

Maybe he needs to clean and lube the blade a little and open and close it
several times to break it in.

Agree that the handle length gets smaller as you use it and get used to it.
It works great when you need to put a bit more force on cutting limbs or
similar. Also, it is just right when you put on gloves.

Yea, that's pretty much what I told him. Sent him home with a bottle of tuff-glide and said he hadn't played with it enough, lol.

I could see that happening. Time will tell!

My go-to knife is my CF M390 Millie.

My backup (or for wearing at the office) is a CTS-20cp Para 2.

My backup to my backup is a ZPD Dragonfly.

Spyderco's answer to the Buck 110

#12

Post by JD Spydo »

There is a profound reason that the C-36 Military model has been around as long as it has. It's truly Spyderco's answer to the Buck model 110 in my opinion. And since they've been doing Sprint runs with different blade steels it's drawn my interest more than ever. I got one a while back with CTS-XHP blade steel and it's already one of my Spyders I'll never let go of.

The Military and Paramilitary both will be around for years to come I predict. I love the Military model because sharpening and overall maintenance are very easy. Having the Military model is almost like having a short fixed blade>> the versatility and the amount of cutting chores you can do with Military model make it an ideal model.

It's one of those Spyderco models that if you had to pick just one model to get by on the Military is probably the second one I would pick. Only to be beat out by the big C-44 Dyad. Sure am looking forward to that Sprint coming soon.
Long Live the SPYDEREDGE Spyderco Hawkbills RULE!!
