Spyderco Pocket Maintainance Tool (just an idea that popped into my head)

If you know anything about Spyderco's history, you probably have seen their very first product. The portable hand. "This "spider-shaped device", which gave the company its name, was a series of angles, ball joints and alligator clips that helped people such as jewelers and hobbyists work with small parts." (Wikipedia) I have a much smaller concept of a tool like this in mind but made for knife maintenance. This may take some explaining so please bear/bare (I don't remember which one it is, lol) with me.

So you have a small, thin stainless steel object shaped pretty much just like the Spyderco Spyder. It would not have a clamp system like the Portable Hand but each of it's eight legs would have a fold out too attached to the bottom of it. A few could be some common Spyderco Torx bits, maybe one could have a scraper type tool for cleaning, maybe even a small very thin brush for scrubbing, stuff like that. The basic concept is, you could have a quick way to tune up/fix minor problems/maintain/clean your knife in the field. Almost like one of those Glock tools. A great example of when this would've been useful for me is when I discovered my Ti Military had slight blade play. Instead of having to wait till I got home to get out my bulky folding torx key tool, I could take this little Spyder shaped tool thing out of my pocket, unfold one of the arms which has one of the common (T15 for the Military pivot) bits and tighten up the pivot. If you really wanted to get crazy, you could make a small part of the tool hollow to store oil, hook this "storage vile" up to one of the folding arms which would have an applicator needle on it and you could smooth out a knife's action. You could even have a sharpening stone only which could provide a rough but ok way to put a serviceable edge on a severely dull knife.

Just a thought, let me know what you think.

Spyderench 2 maybe??

I'm not at all trying to throw water on your idea because I do think that it sounds like it has some potential>>> but more than that I would like to see Spyderco do a completely new type of multi-tool. And maybe a new design of multi-tool could have tools on it which would do much of what you're talking about.

Also I've thought about Spyderco possibly looking into the idea of a survival type tool kit which would have a firestarting device as well as a few other essential tools for survival and backpacking.

Maybe some thoughts to put forward on a possible Spyderench 2 maybe???

Intriguing. So, besides a fire steel, what other tools are you thinking? Conceptually, I like this idea. Comes with a small survival guide.

As much as I was intrigued with the original Golden Colorado made SPYDERENCH I've wondered many times why they didn't base a new tool off of that original idea. I like my Victorinox SWISS TOOL better than about any multi-tool I've ever owned. But I had always had one of my SPYDERENCHs for a companion multitool on several hunting trips and I truly have found the Spyderench useful quite a few times in a pinch.

I"m thinking that they could do a Spyderench 2 model with a firestarter, glassbreaker, can opener and possibly a couple of sharpening rods in the tool as well. With all the survival/prepper movement and TV shows on Nat Geo and other channels I think the timing is excellent to launch such a product. And with Spyderco's being the quality tool maker they are I don't see how it could go wrong>> you could so something novel like add a hawkbill blade and a couple of really aggressive files as well. As hot as the survival goods are at this time I don't think the timing could be any better.

I would love to get my hands on a spyderench. I never new they existed until recently. Maybe they were head of their time? Would a reintroduction today prove to be a smash hit?
