Standard PM2 or Military. I wouldn't go too crazy on the super-steel sprint-run possibilities, which would cost more, and potentially be more of a pain to keep sharp. I wouldn't be looking for a collector's item, although finding a PM2 may seem like it at times.
Some deployments there are very different from others, e.g., some could even be called "cushy".
I'd assume he may have a bigger fixed blade as well.
A standard Manix2 is another possibility, or a Stretch. Lots of good choices available.

Not sure I'd consider the Southard. It is definitely a great knife - but the bearing pivot is brand new. And I'd want something a little more "battle tested" for a 6-mo deployment. I'd take my trusty PM2 and my equally trusty SOG multitool.

Thank you Everyone for your insight,

Change of plans for me. It really isn't me this time. For a good 24hours I thought it was my turn again, but my commander thinks I've been too recently for this tour to be mine. During my last deployment, I carried a KaBar 4062 Dozier Folder. At the time it was my one and only single blade folder. I hadn't been bit by the Spyderco bug yet.

At the time of my OP I really did think I was deploying again, and now that I'm not I feel a little guilty for asking your advice. Out of guilt for my OP, I'll be passing a Spyderco to a bud doing a similar tour. And based on everyone's input, I'm giving him a Pacific SE. He's not the type to be obsessive on keeping it sharp. Chances are he won't carry a sharpener. The H1 Serrated Edge should last him the tour and then some.

Thanks again for everyone's input. I honestly believed I was going back. If I mislead anyone, please accept my sincerest apologies.

James
