Soo..... I was looking at the brilliant Southard... and thinking....
Any chance y'all would consider making a smaller version? Like a < 2.9" one... with a black scale? 3.5" is a bit big for some office situations, and the CB scale, while attractive, is definitely eye-catching.
Just a thought.... :)

Two things put me off the Brad Southard flipper. The least worrying is the price tag. I would still have purchased it at that rate had it not been for the following.
The blade spine has a different design between the gimping and the tip. I have seen similar designs on customs and it really looks bad to me. No matter how much I like the idea behind the knife or the flipper on a Spydie, I won't be pulling the trigger on this one.
I hope that this spine design is dropped on future variations. Will just have to wait.

I wouldn't be surprised to see more designs from Brad. It is an excellent knife and is so far seeming to be a wildly popular model. Look at the Gayle Bradley and Gayle Bradley Air. Two really nice designs from one design collaborator. Two different sizes of knife too. Why would anyone expect less from the Southard/Spyderco relationship?
And by the way, I really like the blade shape of the Southard. Everything about the knife in fact. :D
I would like to see more designs from Brad. A small Southard of this lineage might not be the ticket (at least for me). Flippers seem more sensitive to having enough purchase on the handle. Also, as an expensive model the smaller one would be a marginal price savings which often pushes people to the larger knife (Persian 75mm for example).
I'm always excited to see more knives though. If they make it and people buy it I certainly won't complain :) . I would really like to see a Downing.
There's plenty of precedents for a smaller version of an existing Spyderco collaboration model. I'd imagine the chances of that happening with the Southard in the near future would be slim, but possible in a year or two depending on how well the current version sells and whether Brad Southard would ok it.
I've been carrying mine for about a week (since I got it). I cannot say that I would like the knife more if it were smaller. As it is, the knife is a bit on the medium size, then again my go to knife is a Mlitary. I can also understand wanting a small knife for an office environement, that is where the Chaparral, Dragonfly, Bradley Air, Man Bug, Jester, Ladybug, Kiwi, Squeak, Mouse, Chicago, Cat, UKPK all come into play. There is absolutely no shortage of smaller knives that would be ideal for an office environment. I'm with Michael, I'd love to see a knife with a 4" cutting edge.
I would like to see Spyderco make the Southard Downing. Its a small knife, size is in between an Air and a Squeak. If you compare it's blade with the Dodo the top part is identical just here the reverse S is grinded into a shallow hawkbill. I must say for such a small three finder knife it packs a lot of cutting power.
Blade Length: 2 1/8″ (540 mm)
Clip: Tip Up Carry
Length while Closed: 3 1/8″ (794 mm)
Handle: Titanium / G10
Overall Length (Open): 5 1/4″ (1334 mm)
Opening Device: Thumb Hole
Titanium Framelock
Weight: ~2 oz (56 gr)
They would make a nice pair :)
Current EDC: Techno, Squeak, Southard Flipper, Caly 3.5

Can't say that I would be into a hawkbill like that, but the overall design looks great to me. Bit thick and chunky which I like a lot.
Plus...THAT is how to do a choil. If a knife designer wants to put a choil on a knife, they should look at this knife. A choil shouldn't take up blade, it should fit into the design of the knife.
So if Brad did a drop point, or clip point based on this frame, I would really love it!

Brad makes the Downing with 2 blade styles. I digg both :) I think the 2de will be more up your alley :D

Oh yeah, that modified point Downing is my favorite Southard design. If I get a big bonus one of these years (not likely since Im paying college expenses for 8 years...), I might splurge for that. As is the case with many knives, this version of the Downing "just calls to me".

I love the Downing with the hawkbill, and will probably seek one out in the future. Would love :spyder: to do these - their hawkbills are held in high regard..
