FB05, 1 week review...

#1

Post by vampyrewolf »

OK, guess I've had long enough to give an indepth view on this high preformance matter seperator...

Handle: still want a choil on it! The handle is quite comfy for long term use. made supper(pizza) with it on sunday, cut everything with it.

Blade/Edge: 1 week, and still shaves in single pass... they did it right!(yet again). I've been using the softer of our 3 cutting boards, but it still does a job on edges. Even carved the roast we had on saturday(carefully as to not hit the fork). Using it at work and home in the kitchen, just clean & oil when I get home. I like the belly in the kitchen. Makes a great size for moving chopped food into a pan.

Sheath: still don't like it. payday is tomorrow, and it's going off to eric. have it all back in just under 2 weeks if all goes well.

Overall: well worth the factory price. Might grab a spare of this and toss it in my gear. Then if I somehow manage to break one in the bush, I'll have a spare.

Thanx Wolf. Appreciate. "Break one in the bush"? If you manage to break one, I'd like to see it.

Sal> quick question: what does the fb05 have for a tang? Wondering if it's possible to have a custom maker put on something like a stag or wood handle on it. Just think the little more weight in the rear would be nice.

The tang goes about half way through the handle. I imagine a custom handle could be applied. It would be a "mutha" to form.

Thinking it would have to be 2 slabs, with a milled(or chisled) pocket for the tang. J&B weld and J&W "pins"(holes drilled both slabs, filled with epoxy and pressed together).

Be a bit of sanding to get it fitting the same sheath(or a custom job done after to solve that problem)... would also get a custom fit for the user's hand.

think the main problem would be getting the FRN handle off. Think I read somewhere a guy took the handle off his endura, got a new respect for the material.

Patrick> read somewhere on BF that a guy did a Perrin handle. If I remember correctly he had a terrible time getting the factory handle off. Thought you might like the heads up. Take Care!

We've been using the same method and materials to make Morans, Perrins and Temperances. We've NEVER had a problem with any handle. One guy melted the kraton with a very strong solvent once....didn't affect the FRN.

Here is a pic of a Spydie Moran that someone customed a handle to. Don't remember the pic's source.
