Just curious, but will either of these systems be your first sharpening tool? If so I would suggest you start with a tool a bit more modest, like a SM, Lansky, or Aligner. If one of those simpler systems can't help to get an edge very sharp you wouldn't be getting the most out of a more precise system

I believe the EP and WE are both fine systems :) Capable of high precision, but the knowledge of the user is a determing factor in how effective any system can be

If you're already proficient at sharpening and know how different Spyderco materials will affect your approach to an edge forget all that I've said above and enjoy :D However if an individual is just starting to learn I believe knowlege is increased by achieving success with less precise sytems first.
I am only a novice at sharpening myself, but can consistently get near razor edges with the inexpensive systems I have(DMT Aligner, SM, loaded strop). How an individual uses any system is as, if not more important than the precision of the system itself

Just trying to be helpful :) Wish you the best on your sharpening journey :) It's a fun ride :D

Enjoy whichever system you decide on Alex :) Sharp is good :DClearcut wrote:i have had a SM for a little over a year and i think i can do better edges with a better system
Where in Westchester are you? I was raised in Millwood, kind of between Yorktown, Ossining, and Chappaqua.

Congratulations :) :) Hopefully you can see the Tappan Zee bridge from your window :) I truly love the south, but sometimes feel a bit nostalgic about the area where I was raised :)Clearcut wrote:i lived in Cortlandt Manor all my life ( town over from yorktown) i just moved to tarrytown right by the water with my future wife
From what I've read the EP is a fine system and will help you get your edges very consistent :) I haven't read as much about the WE, but those who use it really enjoy their results. If I were to purchase either I would feel secure based on the anectdotal evidence I've read here :) A neat thing about sharpening is that no one ever gets the "perfect" edge

Congrats again on your engagement and new home :) Say hi to the Hudson for me. :)

I agree with your earlier comment on experience, Charlie. I sharpened freehand for 30 years before picking up a SM back when they first came out. That knowledge gave me the basis of what I was trying to do with the SM and made the learning curve trivial. After the SM I though my edges were as functional as freehand but much easier to achieve.

And then I got a WEPS. I know some guys can get edges like this free hand. I'm just not one of them. My fh/sm edges were sharp enough, but the edges I get off the WEPS are as close to "perfect" as I could ever want. Simply beautiful.dbcad wrote:I haven't read as much about the WE, but those who use it really enjoy their results. .......That is an insane looking edge on that Balance :D :D There is a small chip in my own Balance which you've inspired me to take out :D Thank you for that picture Ken :)
I believe Alex will do fine regardless of his choice.

Thanks Charlie. Yeah, I was amazed at the cutting difference once I thinned it out just a bit. Finished it on 12k Naniwas. It's a micro light saber now.dbcad wrote:  .......That is an insane looking edge on that Balance :D :D There is a small chip in my own Balance which you've inspired me to take out :D Thank you for that picture Ken :)
How'd you chip yours?
Before putting this edge on I kinda messed mine up too. Our furnace filters are 1/2" too long (supposed to take 25" but there are sheet metal screws holding the track on, it's a real pain!) Tried something new, wanted to preslice the cardboard before cutting the mesh but the Blance cut them first, and took the hit for being too aggressive....

I totally agree with you.dbcad wrote:I believe Alex will do fine regardless of his choice.
