My guess would be obsidian, GB, Dragonfly, and the Centofante 3. Happy Birthday!

You are very solidly on base fdrotary :) I will amend the original post appropriately. I did mean the steel blades. I will ignore references to the sharpness of the Obsidian in all previous geusses and will only look at the order of the three "steel" blades :)Fdrotary wrote:I may be horribly off base but the title says "3 knives, 3 materials, all sharp, which is sharper, in order?" Yet everyone is listing 4 knives... Is the Obsidian even an option or is it pictures just so people see the potential prize?
Also of the stone edge were included there would 16 possibilities instead of 9

To chuck, yes glass is knappable. Pictured is a point made from some 150 yr old staned glass and a longish blade made from some old Carrara structural glass. Also is the PPT which I recieved because the Spydercrew had the graciousness to pick my picture of the Swick for the first calendar contest.
Thanks folks for the geusses and replies :D

Thanks DB, that's interesting. Do you knap or do any knapping?dbcad wrote:You are very solidly on base fdrotary :) I will amend the original post appropriately. I did mean the steel blades. Cento
GB

I don't do any knapping myself Chuck. I have easy access to the stone and glass stuff because a guy on third shift in the storeroom has this craft as his hobby. You know I've given away a lot of his stuff before. a lot of folks here can really appreciate it :) Brian even heat treats the stone to give them better color and knapping properties.chuck_roxas45 wrote:Thanks DB, that's interesting. My focus in hobby will remain on the sharpening of the metal. My primary learning focus is to contiuously get more capable in my professional field of machinery design and modeling. Even at 50 my thinking is still agile enough to run rings around the new hotshot engineer :) For that I am thankful :) (thinking of the Canadians

Gayle Bradley (thin edge to start), Dragonfly (significantly lowered edge angle) and then Centofante (looks like it got the Janich treatment for self defence so I'm guessing slightly more durable edge geometry).

OK, I normally don’t enter contests but, this sounds interesting. Here are my pick and a little bit of the reasoning:
Assumptions:
1) The Dragonfly is a ZDP blade. Not completely sure about that color of the handle in the picture.
2) All of the edge geometries and levels of sharpness are the same. It’s hard to tell from a picture but, I’m assuming you like the same sharpening angles on your blades.
Picks:
Gayle Bradley, the M4 should sharpen up nicely.
Centofante3, I’ve got to go with VG10 over ZDP.
Dragonfly, ZDP never seems as sharp to me.
I can’t wait to hear the result. I think it could lead to some interesting discussions.

Gayle Bradley
Dragonfly
Centofante
I'm basing my choice on how I think each steel sharpens up. All are great but I think I've gotten sharper edges in this order: M4, ZDP, VG-10. This is a gut feeling since all three get real sharp and I have never compared them.
Another thing is sharpness vs better slicer are two different things because grind, blade thickness, etc. effects slicing when all edges are equally sharp. I'm not asking exactly what you mean since this is all fun.

Just a heads up folks. I'll be drawing the winner on Saturday the 13th, probably early in the morning EST.
Additional replies are allowed and encouraged, just not more than 1 geuss on the order of my percieved sharpness
I will give no hint as to the order that's etched in my mind.
Enjoy your knives and keep 'em sharp :D

The time has come, thanks all for participating :) Random.org is up on the other screen, all I have to do is hit the generate button
Making my own subjective observation about sharpness coupled with hearing your thoughts has been enlightening :D When it comes to cutting something thin and flimsy that offers little resistance, taking into account my own limited sharpening skills, the blade material seems to start playing a greater role although other factors like grind still play a part.
I know nothing for sure but I'm getting the inclination that it's easier for me to get a very, very sharp edge from the harder, more refined materials.
The answer to my very subjective perception is: GB, D'Fly, Cento.................It's been great fun musing on this question of sharpness, materials, and perception :D :D........Still interested in others thoughts on the subject :)
Hitting the generate button...........the result is 20...BigBill, you have won a very attractive and unique obsidian knife :) It makes for a very attractive display piece :) PM with your mailing address and I'll get it to you.
Thanks to all for participating. I could get more long winded, but I have a largish piece of pork to get on the smoker :D
