Is this Caly 3 modified?

#1

Post by calyco »

Took me awhile to find but just got another G10 Caly 3 in the mail. Thing is I dont remember it having the smooth recessed area on the G10, right near the spyder hole. So has this Caly 3 been modified? Any info would be appreciated, thanks.

Interesting. Can't say if it's "stock" or not, because I don't have a G-10 Caly 3, but am inclined to think it isn't. Neither of my Cf ones have a relief cut like that and my G-10 Caly 3.5 doesn't have it either. All have uniformly narrow bevels around the perimeter of their scales. And, while none of them are particularly well detailed, the photos in the catalogs from the years when the G-10 Caly 3 was in production don't appear to show that relief cut either. Most importantly, there are two auctions right now on eBay for SE G-10 Caly 3s, and one for a Caly 3 sheath that features a G-10 Caly 3, and the photos in them clearly show their scales do not have that relief cut.

If it's intended as a user, and you got it at a decent price, the cut is probably a plus. If it was sold as "pristine", "like new", "New Old Stock", etc, then you might want to contact the seller.

I went back to the picture and zoomed in. Now I see what you mean.

After zooming, I agree that someone smoothed off the edge of the scales.

Yes. It's modified. That is not factory.

Not trying to be a wet blanket, but is it possible that it is a counterfeit? I recall some pretty convincing Caly or UKPK fakes that were floating around awhile back.

I held my Caly 3.5 up to the photo. Everything else I could see looked the same. No shots of the blade or clip.
The box is different from the red/black ones, but I've seen the gray ones on other recent photos.

Plenty of fake UKPK's floating aroung, but I've yet to see a fake Caly 3. I realize that, given the way things are going lately, you can't totally rule out any model from any company being convincingly faked, but I'm still guessing the Op's Caly 3 is a real one that's been modified, rather than a counterfeit.

The grey box would be correct for at least the early G-10 Caly 3's Not sure if they survived long enough to enter the red/black box era.

OK - it was the UKPK fakes that I saw. I could not remember.

My first Caly 3 came in a red/black box, FYI, but that was the year that they became discontinued.

IIRC, the CF and G-10 versions came out at the same time and I have two CF ones, both early, both in grey boxes. However, I don't find it surprising that the G-10 version spanned the grey box and red/black box eras.

Here's mine, in original - unchamfered - shape, from 2007/2008 (grey box), along with its brothers:

I do like the mod, though. Seems carefully executed. Enjoy that fine piece.

Thanks for the info guys. Knife was advertised as used, in excellent condition but not modified ($80). I agree Murdoc, it looks like the person took his time and it actually feels pretty ergo in hand. Almost fooled me lol. Think I will prob return it though, and put the funds toward a like new one.. kinda hard to find now though. Any thoughts on the Caly 3 vs. Caly 3.5?

Definitely Caly 3.5

The Caly 3.5 is not noticeably bigger than the Caly 3 when folded, but the blade is .5" longer.
