Are Salts dishwasher-safe?
Are Salts dishwasher-safe?
This might be a silly question, but...
As H1 steel 'will not rust', does this mean that the knives from the Salt line may be washed in a dishwasher? I don't know how FRN behaves in high temperature...

FRN handled knives can be autoclaved, so dishwasher temperatures shouldn't hurt them. H-1, at least in theory, should not be subject to the etching/pitting that dishwasher detergents can cause. OTOH, it scratches fairly easily, so unless you have things arranged so nothing else can come in contact with it, there's a good chance of finding scratches and dings on the blade. Also, like any sharp knife the edge can damage the coating on dishwasher baskets, so the only safe way to wash it would be closed, which doesn't make much sense unless you're just trying to clean the handle.

I'd totally agree that some chemicals can pit H-1, just not sure dishwasher detergent contains any of them in sufficient concentrations to do so in normal use. After all, folks wash stainless steel knives, forks, spoons, pots, pans, and other kitchen tools in their dishwashers every day. Heck, I've run brass HO and N gauge locomotive shells and rolling stock through a dishwasher to degrease them prior to painting, and brass should be far easier to corrode than steel. Of course, if someone applied a thick coating of damp dishwasher detergent to an H-1 blade and left it in a damp place for a day or two, I would not be the least bit surprised to hear it had pitted.stalag2 wrote:Im quite sure H1 can get corroded by dishwasher chemicals, as far as i know it is rust proof but can still get pitted by some chemicals.

I have absolutely no clue about the kind of chemicals used for dishwashers but i have an old kitchen utility knife with some kind of bolster made of aluminum and it turned black and nasty looking pitted after some dishwashing fun, so well, its just aluminum but its still far beyond the results you would get with normal use with sweat, blood and acidic foods.
Back to the subject, i managed to pit my caspian with orange juice left overnight because i was too lazy to rinse it off.

i just remembered that the old spydie kitchen knives with the sermollan (sp?) handles would get messed up in the dishwasher. it would eat away the handles of the knives. Also when i first became a member i asked if it was OK to put :spyder: s in the DW and was told by i think TazKristi or another mod NOT to. I am sure that is still the official answer.

You kinda misunderstood.MsbS wrote:OK, so another el stupido question. I kinda understood from the posts above that the Salts are 'H1 only' - the liners, nuts & bolts, lock elements are all made of H1?
Blades are H-1 and I'm pretty sure the lockbars are H-1 as well. Clips and clip screws are titanium, at least on any Salt series knives made in the last few years. The rest of the hardware is an extremely rust resistant stainless steel.
