Moving Manix 2

#1

Post by jackthedog »

I'll be the first to admit that I have more knives than I can realistically use, but that's the fun in collecting them. So, when my wife and I recently learned we'd be moving to another state, I decided that I wanted to dedicate one knife to the entire move and use it throughout. After much deliberation, I decided on my Manix 2. It was my first Spyderco and among my favorite designs. I sharpened up on the Sharpmaker until it was capable of easily shaving and set out to begin packing.

Now, as we are finishing up the move in our new home, the fun has really started: opening and breaking down boxes. The Manix has so far handled it with ease. The 154CM blade has lost it's shaving sharp edge but it just devoured 6 giant moving boxes that had to be broken down to tiny pieces (really, it was necessary) to be put into the garbage. It also opened more boxes than I can remember and was great when it came to trimming down a slightly too large plastic silverware holder.

I don't often get a chance to really heavily use my knives but when I do, I do appreciate them even more. The Manix 2 has taken everything I've thrown at it and it is extremely comfortable to use. I've really had to pull hard on it break some boxes down and the knife is still solid (just really minimal play in the blade if I grab the tip and really pull it back and forth).

All and all to say, I've always known that the Manix 2 was a winner but using it so much confirms it. I do have some more boxes to cut down, but I think it's only fair to switch over to another knife. And it'll just be more fun.

Thanks for reading my ramblings but I know fellow Spydernuts would understand.

The Manix 2 is a go-to knife for me to get chores done too, a very solid and comfortable design. Thanks for sharing a good story.

Good idea, using only one knife. I know I can't be the only person who cuts something with one knife, only to pull out another one to see how it performs. How did the hollow grind perform on the cardboard?

Now you just need to get an XL to appreciate it even more.

The hollow grind did very well on the cardboard. I was surprised and had no complaints.

I agree for the most part but find the jimping to be a little aggressive. The handle is so good ergonomically that I am not sure all the extra jimping is necessary.

How did you find it with extended use?

I actually found the jimping on the spine quite helpful and didn't really notice the jimping in other places on the knife.

You might be able to take the scales off and file down the jimping a tiny little bit.

Sorry to hijack the thread...

I have thought about it, but I have very little free time, basic maintenace and sharpening are about all I get too, what ends up happening is I pull out the PM2, millie or original Mini Manix to use instead. This is a mod I have thought about a number of times. I will at least give it a try with gloves on first to see if it makes much or a difference.

Nice write up, Jack. I hope the move went smoothly. The Manix2 is a workhorse for sure!

I sold off all my sprints but I don't think I will ever get rid of the basic Manix 2.

Nice report! I did the same last year. I chose my S90V Paramillie 2, afterwards I only had to touch up the edge near the tip. There were no chips, but after I cut electrical cords all morning, it wasn't quite as sharp as the rest of the edge.

I'm also set to move in a few days into the house that we have been building since January. My knives are all packed and I was gonna carry and use my Tenacious(and the other knives of my carry combo, ZT 301 and VECP) until we have all settled in the new house. The only thing was that I missed my carry rotation too much and I couldn't stop myself. I just went ahead and unpacked my knives and changed out the Ten with a blue para.
