Recommendations for small knives

#1

Post by tarsier »

I usually buy and sell knives about twice each year, once in December/January and once in June/July. So, the time is nigh for some new stuff. I just placed an order for a new SAK and another stockman. Now, it's Spydie Time...

I usually lean towards the smaller knives. In that category, I currently own two G10 Navigators, a SS Dragonfly, a Micarta Jester, and a Ladybug II. For my upcoming purchase, the two knives that I'm considering are the Mouse (either original or BladeTech re-release) or the Kiwi. I am leaning towards the Kiwi, since the Wharncliffe blade would probably be more useful for my everyday tasks. Going slightly larger, I noticed that the discontinued SS Calypso Jr is available from a couple of different sources. And, to throw a wild card in the mix, the Solo Buttonlock is still listed on the Spyderco web site for $25.

If you can think of any other small Spydies that I should be considering, I would appreciate hearing about them. Or, any special bargains that you've noticed around the Internet.

Thank you.

I'd suggest that you take a look at the SS Cricket.

The Solo Buttonlock rocks. Especially for the price. The G-10 Rookies and Standards are also nice. If you're willing to break from Spydie,SMKW has Gerber G-10 SLG 3.25's for only $16.99. Slim blade, good ergos,light,ATS-34 steel, and J-style pocket clip. I've got the CF version, and you can't beat a deal like this.

The original Mouse. They are no longer being made AFAIK, and they are being sold at a clearance price of about $60 at places like bladeart. Get one while the gettin is good.

One of the best big/small Spydies is the Delica. If you don't yet have one, then you NEED one.

SS Cricket, or the SS Kiwi. Both are small, and nice. I have the Cricket, and I may pick up a Kiwi.
The Mouse is also nice. I also have one, but I have always carried it in a neck sheath, never in my pocket.

If you like the blade shape of the Kiwi, I'd also suggest a look at the C57 Toad. I never liked the looks of it, but a few months ago, I got one for an excellent price and it's really grown on me.

Thanks for the suggestions everyone.

Cricket - I will see if I can find one to handle in person. I am pretty confident that the Kiwi and Mouse will fit my hand. Not too sure about the Cricket though, it might be almost too thin for me. I'll also search for some pictures that show the handle width.

Dodo - I'm a little slow to adopt new technology, especially when it comes to locks. I have a Benchmade with an Axis lock. It's smooth, but I don't know if I fully trust it yet. The ball lock seems to be along the same lines.

Delica - I was planning on replacing my older style Delica with a CF one this year, but I seem to be using the SS Dragonfly for the chores that I used to use the Delica for. Maybe if I have some funds left over, I'll pop for an FRN model. Seems wrong to be without one...

I'll check out some of the other models mentioned also. Thanks again, folks.
