Best use of my Spyderco that I will likely not be able to do again for my family.

On 7/26/2012 I had the honor of cutting our third (and final as far as we are planning) son's umbilical cord with my Spyderco Jess Horn Sprint with ZDP-189 that was reground by Tom Krein. No pics uploaded yet of our son, but the midwife was the same one from our first two sons so she new my request was coming. :)

The knife had been cleaned, sharpened and stowed in the baby "go" bag so it was ready for a little alchohol swab when the time came.

As a thank you gift, this midwife has received a Dragonfly with VG-10 PE blade for our first safe delivery (David) and a 204 Triangle Sharpmaker for the second safe delivery (Joseph). My wife has a different plan for this occasion (Michael) but we will be handing out an Spyderco Assist to the doctor who came in even though he was on vacation to fullfill a promise he had made to my wife.

My wife and our newly arrived son are home and doing very well.

Thanks again to Spyderco for the high performance tools that they produce and for their cherished friendship with our family.

Cheers,
Doug, Jenn, David, Joseph and baby Michael

PS: Pics will be added once they are available. :)

THis is great buddy. Congratulations. Very classy what you're gifting to the midwife and the doctor. Nicely done!

Congrats! What did you use to cut the cord against? Those things are rubbery.

I believe he said the Jess Horn. First time I've ever heard of anyone doing this though, always thought the doctors did it with scissors. Regardless, congratulations!!!

Usually, two sections of the cord are clamped and one snips in between. Just wondering whether he folded the cord over (seems awkward) to cut it or had something to cut against.

Doug,
Congratulations to you and your family!
What a great heirloom gift to give to your son one day. That is, passing on the knife to him that you used that day.

Very cool. Congratulations to you and the Mrs.

My third (and final) Son is a Michael as well, but I didn't think of such a cool entrance ceremony! Well done!

Maybe the doctor held it out and then he "Cold Steel'd" the cord with his blade.

Congratulations. Best wishes to you and family.

That's one way to initiate family in to the Spyderco range. I like that kind of thinking.
