Importance of grammar, spelling, consideration, and coherence in forum posts??

Before we get too haughty looking down out noses at grammatical mistakes and spelling. This forum is hosted in the USA but posters are from all over the world. For some of them (US) English is a foreign language.

I also want you to know several posts and their resulting comments have had me: LOL*

*: LOL is an abbreviation tweens and teens use when they text message, email, chat online, or even communicate verbally. LOL can stand for Laughing Out Loud.

As an American, I participate on many forums of my various hobbies and most if not all of them have many members from other countries. It is only natural. Much of what is popular on the internet such as Youtube, Twitter and many hobby-related forums were started by American companies and American enthusiasts so they are in English. English is a second language for many people around the world so it makes it easy for them to participate and it gives us all a chance to share experiences with people from all over the world.

That being said, I don't think that excuses people with English as a second language to be lazy and or sloppy, or native-English speakers for that matter. But that doesn't mean one has to be rude or condescending to them. People who are honestly trying to use English and are trying to improve their skills should take kindly to constructive criticism.

I often read a forum post that has some problem with spelling, grammar or whatever and if the person is in another country I usually cut them some slack as long as they're trying. It is often the American with bad spelling and grammar that irks me.

In any case I think that if you're participating on a forum of any language it is incumbent on you to strive to learn the rules of the language you're using. I lived in Poland for a time and I had to learn the language to get by. I learned to read, write and speak Polish and I did not rely on English to get by. For one thing, I spoke better Polish than the majority of Pols spoke English so I had no choice, however, I think that if you're living in another country or participating in a forum with a language foreign to your own, the onus should be on you to conform to the rules and the norms and not the other way around.

P.S. My biggest pet peeve with spelling errors is people confusing loose and lose. Most often it is someone using loose when they mean lose. Like "when did you loose your cat?" or "I hope we don't loose the game".

I agree with your post wholeheartedly! My biggest pet peeve, linguistically speaking, is the improper use of the words; then and than. I see these two words misused more often than any other words in the English language! I cringe! Get it right, people!

I see your point, to wit, " internet such as Youtube" the Internet is capitalized and YouTube uses an upper case T for Tube.

I believe your pet peeve is with word use, in each application they are spelled correctly, Lose and Lose are spelled correctly, they are used incorrectly.

It's been a great pleasure for me to converse with folks here through Google translator as well as doing my my best at times to understand stilted english. It's always my pleasure to avail myself of the translator and discuss if the intent and desire to share is genuine :)

Occasionally, my laptop computer begins to overheat and goes to all caps and mistakes and refuses to work with the spacebar. Techy-crap falls on me often with my 7 yr-old laptop.

...and my gd-kids tell me that it can also be "lots of love." So it depends upon who's talking to whom...
I can read thru most typing mistakes. Such as that one. I often use nite and ok, although once I was spanked by some forum person who thot that ok was not good unless it was spelled as "okay."
Some folks will like to "cowboy it up" a bit and pretend that Will Rogers is alive and well. And I don't mind that.
I go thru this with my own wife, and we concur that as long as we were able to communicate effectively, then to heck with any picky errors, whether purposeful or not.
After all, isn't communication the goal of language?

Ele nunca foi concebido para ser um pensamento crítico, apenas tentando obter feedback e consciência. Espero sinceramente que você não deixe o fio com um sentimento de que "a polícia gramática" está olhando para você.

If I may go waayyy off on a tangent. In thallium's post about misspelling loose for lose, reminds of a young coworker in a factory many years ago. He had a tattoo on his upper arm that read "BORN TO LOOSE"
As if that was not bad enough to have on your arm forever, the "Artist" had scribbled over the tattoo like a child would do, to cover up his mistake, yet all was still very readable! :D
