Spyderco Forager Pics and thoughts

Well, "TOM" from the USN held a gaw that only New Zealanders could enter---- being that USN is made of kiwis a whole 2 people entered :roflmao:- made the chances better though- winner was decided by a coin toss.- amazingly , I won :eek: I never win- EVER, but that was a welcome change- tom said " Don`t get too excited,slightly silly,but something you can use
Need to think of something else to throw in there as well."

pass 2 weeks and my "mystery pack" has arrived. I was excited to get it, I was thinking it would be a small prizepack, maybe a small flashlight, knife and some other nicknacks- stuff I could use and would be cool to have. A USNM patch came in the mail courtesy of MiniMag, sweet patch man!. anyway- I was in for a surpise. I opened it up ( he DID NOT hold back on the packaging :haha :) and hello - thats big . I pulled it out and HOLY CRAP a forager=- I took it out of the package in awe- yelping like an over-excited 5 year girl getting a wowwi pop- and thats not it- 80 dollars fell from the tec-lock :eek: .

Image

I cant thank you more tom :o , I really appreciate this, its like you KNEW i wanted a beefy FB or something
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
So- when you first grab this knife- first thoought is " wow thats thick!" then " look at that tip :eek: "
Image The Hossom FB line comes with 5.5 mm thick N690Co steel- a pretty freaking good performer and plenty strong for chopping with the THICK edge this thing has- probably around 1.8mm behind the edge or so. it came with a convex edge that was dull and fat, I took to it with some sandpaper and a soft paper towel backing and dropped the angle a good amount- it now has a big shiny 0.5 micron finished convex with a 22/side micro bevel.
The knife has the beautiful lusterous finish like spydercos tend to have Image] that with a mirror convex makes it a beautiful piece. The blade shape offers a large belly and a recurve that makes it perform great.
The center of weight is about a finger space infront of the front choil, I personally love where the center of weight is, it helps you chop with immense force on that big belly. The thickness on this knife makes it split kindling very well- like a knife shaped hatchet- it also allows you do do some good prying without damage.
The handle is super ergonomic. It has lovely contoured micarta that make it fill the hand wonderfully. The choil grip is also extremely ergonomic and allows you to take advantage of how well this knife whittles- This thing whittles amazingly, making feathersticks with this for example, was a heck of a lot easier than using my paramilitary 2. The jimping on this knife is SHARP, REALLY hard cut, when your thumb is on there- it will not move. I managed to abrade a bit of skin when I stabbed the knife into a tree in saber grip - THAT is some serious jimping- if you stab with this knife its a lot better in a gorilla grip, ;) . Image
The sheath is very nice, it doesnt spare rivots- it uses what it needs- had a great teclock belt clip and with a tiny bit of tweaking and remolding, it holds the knife in better, with zero sheath play. It even has a drainage hole so if you wade through water, it doesnt just stay full, weighing you down more and rusting your knife.
This overall is a very impressive knife and I am very thankful :)
Thanks for the pics razorsharp.
It's so funny about this forum and pictures. This is a knife that I haven't even given
a second look at, it was never on my radar..... until now. That's a sweet knife. The
pictures definately do it justice.
Man, I hate this forum.
the 2174 posts dont say that :p :p :p
I am gonna extensively use it tomorrow, might face it off against my machete (with a chisel bevel) and a hatchet with a good hair popping edge on all 3. From the amount I have used it, you can chop and not bind to the wood due to the huge fat convex edge , if you chop with say, a machete or something with a thiner geometry, it just binds. I havent really used hatchets much so im looking forward to seeing the difference in performance
That is a pretty cool giveaway! Very generous!
I like my Forager too, although I haven't used it much. The Hossam line is another one of those that just didn't appeal to me until after it was discontinued. Fortunately I was able to pick one up at a good price from Sierra Trading Post when they were clearing them out.
I really like the choil on it, makes it easy to "choke up" for fine detail cutting. The way the screws stick out of the handle a bit struck me as odd at first, but not uncomfortable and I got used to it.
Which Knife, A or B? get Both! (and C, D and E) :)
When I got mine it was crazy sharp. I was showing a buddy how sharp it was by shaving my arm, and got a little more than hair! What's bad is that I did it a second time like a idiot. My buddy said "dude you are bleeding" before I figured out that I needed to stop. It would shave paper like crazy for such a thick bladed knife. I have to admit that I wish it had a more conventional edge.
It is a good chopper, but on angled cuts it wants to bounce off instead of digging in. Maybe if the convex edge was more gradual it would dig in and cut a little better.
Very nice score. I got a Forester and Dayhiker when they were on closeout. Wonderful fit and finish. Only 2 gripes; too thick grinds (thinned out both kept the convex) and my Forester sheath doesn't have good retention (the Dayhiker sheath is great).
I sometimes carry the Forester as an ax replacement :D
I just blow torched the kydex to a softer state and pinched it to the handle a tad and pulled the knife out RIGHT before it was hard
