Spyderco Salt Question

#1

Post by DigitalUrbanCamo »

Hey guys, I'm new to the forums and wanted to ask a question regarding the Salt line. I live in The United States (Michigan) and am currently in the market for a swimming knife. I have been thinking of getting a Spyderco salt to take with me to the beach. The only problem is I am wondering if after many swims in the lakes will I start to see problems regarding the bushings rusting out or rusting of the blade? I know the H1 steel is rust resistant but I wonder if it would stay that way while submerged in water over extended use. So if anyone out there has and experience with the Salt line please let me know what you have found.

I take a Salt Pacific and a Salt 1 to the salt water beaches of Virginia quite often. I go crabbing, surf-fishing, and swimming with the kiddos quite often and haven't had the slightest rust problems. I wash them out with fresh water every evening. If you're in the fresh water of Michigan, you'll be fine. The Salt 1 has the same ergos as the Delica line. I love it. The Pacific feels considerably larger and I wouldn't carry it for swimming, but easily pocket it when pier fishing or crabbing. Good Luck choosing. I hope you use this as an excuse to buy another/more knife(s).

Welcome to the forums :)

The Salt line is completely rust proof and they don't have bushings. You could lose the knife in the Dead Sea and find it a month later without fear.

The serrated model holds an edge way longer FYI.

Hi DigitalUrbanCamo,

Welcome to the Spyderco Forums. Just to clarify, H1 is not rust resistant... it is rust proof. The entire knife is rust proof (internal components and the clip too).

We've seen a lot of interesting tests with H1; various people have gone to great lengths to try and make it rust without success.

I hope that gives you a little more confidence with your choice.

Enjoy your time here with us!

Kristi

Hi - and welcome to the forum. I know nothing about H-1 and have zero experience with it. I do know I have often thought about picking one up for a "running" knife when I am putting in some miles. I figure the salt from sweat would take its toll on a blade/knife too. That said, my wife runs with a VG-10 Rescue but she does not sweat like I do. It does not show any signs of rust but she actually rinses it off occasionally. I'd like to get one and never rinse it out - just to experiment (I think Spyderco makes an H-1 Wave Endura - which would be perfect). I would think that QE at Spyderco would run salt-fog testing and they probably did with the blade but not sure about the whole knife. Sorry for the un-informed response.

Thank you everybody for the worm welcome and the quick reply. I feel confident now that I will have long use out of the salt series without an issue of rust. Also thanks for letting me know that there are no bushings in these knives. Looks like my next swimming and beaching trip will be accompanied by a salt (not sure what one yet).

Once again thanks guys and gals.

FWIW, the only people who have managed to corrode H-1 did so by exposing it to environments in which the owner would incur fatal damage long before the knife sustained any.

Yes.

Do not sit in a box of chlorine tablets. It's not recommended by the Surgeon General nor Spyderco.

Has anyone tried submerging it in lava yet? I bet that would corrode it :D

If you haven't picked one out yet, I'd recommend the Dragonfly Salt SE. It cuts like a beast and weighs almost nothing.

Worst thing you would have to worry about in the Lakes would be Zebra Mussels. :)

My Salt 1 is the knife in my pocket when I exercise on the trails after work every day. It does get soaked in sweat and that's why I chose that particular model. The Delica is my EDC so the Salt makes a perfect companion if it's going to stay soaked for any length of time.

Actually I just ordered the Spyderco Salt I Plain Edge. I really was hoping to get a salt model with a blade length of about 3 inches and FFG but the only FFG for the series is the ladybug and that blade is to small. So I guess the saber grind will have to do.

So now that this topic is up... Hey Spyderco people, any chance of getting a H1 Spyderco Salt model in FFG 3-4" with the classic FRN handle? Preferably with milled out FRN handle scales like what you did with the translucent blue Manix 2. :D

Forgive my ignorance. This is a genuine question and I am not trying to be sarcastic.

I understand the value of a knife when diving/fishing and even canoeing, but why do you need a knife for swimming?

Really big Salmon or Lake trout, maybe a giant fresh water Drum that's gorged on zebra mussels.

the salt is a nice knife but alot of people just carry a delica and clean it off when they get home from swimming, fishing or whatever and the vg10 is great too!

Yea but the Salt doesn't have liners or hardware to get mucky. Not that a Delica can't be cleaned just fine but it will take longer than a Salt. That and you should do it sooner than later (vs a Salt without a timeframe).
