If you had to chose a Syderco...

...each from a different country of origin which would you chose and why? From what I understand their production can be here in the US, Japan, China, Taiwan and Italy.

If I'm forgetting something please throw them in. Also, if anyone has insight on the different Spyder logo's from each country I'd be greatly appreciative. I saw someone break it down in a video once and I can't find it again for the life of me.


Edit: Clearly I meant Spyderco in the thread title. I'm starting to think less that I'm completely clueless in spelling and maybe have a funky stuck keyboard. That's my excuse anyway and I'm sticking to it.

My favorite models come from Golden, USA . I have more Spydercos from Japan and Taiwan than I do from Golden.
I would rather buy American but I would also have to deal with the consequences of my choice if I drew a line in the sand.

USA: Paramilitary 2 (great looks, ergonomics, and utility)
Japan: Delica 4 (my favorite light-duty EDC)
Taiwan: upcoming Chaparral 2 Ti (XHP steel and beautifully-etched scales)

All of these I actually own, btw.


US: Yojimbo 2 (by just a hair over the Para2). Great compression lock, weight, size and design. A little funkier than the other Golden models and the Wharncliffe blade is really useful too.

Japan: Pacific Salt. Love the H1!

China: Tenacious (blue). I own a black one, but am nuts about the blue.

Taiwan: Sage 1. Just a perfect pocket folder. Just big enough, yet small in the pocket. Opens like butter.


and Italy: I own nothing.

Depends on the model and if it has the attributes I'm looking for. I have tried a few china knives and although they are a good value and are solid knives, all except for the razorsharp Bug in my wallet have been gifted.

These Syderco are all far too tempting. I have a blue Stretch, Bradley, PPT, Superleaf, Delica, Green Lum, Delica, Urban, D'Fly, etc. I'd like to try the Para, and Native5, but financial reality interferes.

For me the country of origin doesn't matter too much. All depends if you like the knife :)

Well, nothing works as well for me as a midlock with a Spyderhole, so that rules out China and Italy, at least for the moment.

I'm also new to spyderco and I want to collect 1x spyderco with a different lock type.
I can also expand my collection to country of manufacture as well. My wish list:

USA: Paramilitary2, MiniPara2 (a dream), Sharpmaker, SM ultra fine stones
China: Persistence (my first spyderco knife)
Japan: Dragonfly Salt, Salt2 (hoping this comes out soon), Urban

I guess my list cannot stick to only one from each country :p

Thats my thing too Clodus. I just like the theme of having something from everywhere. Along with the other themes I've justified in my own head.

Someone mentioned use, but for me anything bigger or with a different blade shape than my Sage's on a daily basis isn't need. My ParaMilitary2 is the same way, really does any job I could ever ask of it.

For my different country collection I have a few represented already obviously but being Italian American I definitely want a knife with that same kind of lineage. Maybe the LionSpy. As far as China goes, I'm getting the least expensive knife I can but if someone knows best quality I'm all ears.

Hi, BadFish. The Rock Lobster is made in Seki-City Japan.

Good question, FroOchie. Although the majority of the Spydies I own were made in Japan, I also own several models that were made in the USA, Taiwan, China, and Italy (such as my C154 Squeak). As a long-time Spyderco collector, I’ll honestly say that I don’t worry too much about where the Spydie is made. Basically, if it’s a Spyderco, I know that the quality will be there. Having said that, however, some of my all-time favorite Spydies are from the days when I first started collecting (and just so happen to all be made in Japan). These include the C48 Wegner, C42 Viele, C46PTI Bob Lum Tanto, C73GPS Ed Scott Impala, SC01PCP SpyderCard, to name a few. In summary, I don’t think you could go wrong with any Spydie—regardless of where it was made. :)

I would like to try one of the Taichung made models. I hear nothing but good things about them. No interest now in the Italian stuff. Delica 4 is the classic Japan Spyderco, tied for me with the Stretch. PM2 is my favorite from Golden. Only China models I own are a first generation Cara Cara, an incredible value in a solid folder, and a Byrd Wings which is cool but too fat to pocket carry.

For me It would be the Taiwan made knives being my favorite ( leaving political issues aside of course)
I own several knives from there and the Fit and Finish is superb on every one. You can tell the employees at that plant care about the finished product and have pride in what they do. My second choice would be the American made models. Love to support my country when I can. The quality is very good and we all know most of the cool sprint runs come from there.Third choice would be China. I have several of the Byrd series knives (mostly SS handled models) that have the tightest lock up and better fit and finish than the Japanese models I have purchased in the last several years.
This is just my observations on the knives that I own, others may have a different point of view.
