How Many Of You Still Consider Pluto A Planet?
How Many Of You Still Consider Pluto A Planet?
Okay, so I've watched, The Universe, on the History Channel one time too many. :)
Seriously, though, how many of you still consider Pluto to be a planet of our solar system?
I, for one, say, "YES," Pluto IS a planet of our solar system in spite of what the scientists say. :)
Even if it's not a planet by their current standards, the least the scientists could've done was grandfather Pluto into planethood.
Anyway, as far as I'm concerned, Pluto is a planet! It was a planet when I first studied astronomy as a kid in elementary school, and it's still a planet today in spite of what the experts think.
How about you? :)

Technically Pluto is now classified as a Dwarf Planet, as there are larger celestial bodies further out than Pluto from our planetary central sun star.
So Pluto's still called Pluto and it's now just a dwarf planet. The main classification of a planet and prerequisite is that the certain body has to clear all other major orbiting objects from it's orbit around the sun, and there's a lot of hard to see debris out there with intersecting orbits.
Honestly I think it's just a moot point, and regardless of how it's classified it will still be out there among many other celestial objects going 'round the sun. Dwarf planet or planet, it will always be known as Pluto. To me it really doesn't matter how astronomers classify this object.

Oh, but I have watched them... and I don't agree with them. :) Yes, I understand the points they make; however, it's the principle of the matter. Pluto has been a planet for all those/these years... they ought to leave it alone and go pick on something else. After all, Jupiter, Saturn, Neptune, and Uranus are pretty much just big balls of gas, yet they're still planets. At least Pluto is solid. :)Azwaiian wrote:LOL! I've seen a few videos of Dr. Tyson Degrasse discussing why he and others downgraded Pluto from planet status. The videos are on Youtube and are pretty informative. After watching them, you may agree that it is not a planet.![]()
Anyway, in my book, Pluto is a planet... always was and always will be. :)

Well said sir, well said! My buddy I work with said the same thing, I like to egg him on by quoting Dr. Degrasse! Always a good topic to keep our minds sharp.Water Bug wrote: Anyway, in my book, Pluto is a planet... always was and always will be. :)
I also think this is a cool subject of discussion too. It shows that America is not all about reality t.v. shows and what star is wearing what designers clothing. Rock on with the science threads!
I'm glad to see I'm not the only one.Water Bug wrote:I, for one, say, "YES," Pluto IS a planet of our solar system in spite of what the scientists say.
In fact, I looked it up on the internet and there seems to be many of us! I even found T-shirts with sayings such as "Bring back planet Pluto" or "When I was your age, Pluto was a planet".
I might buy one...

Agreed! And, I like Degrasse as well, long before he starred on Big Bang Theory where he was verbally assaulted by Sheldon Cooper for degrading Pluto from planet status. :)Azwaiian wrote:Well said sir, well said! Man, the changes in science since I was a kid in school are huge. I can't think of any that haven't changed in some way what they consider facts. We are still in infancy when it comes to most sciences yet explain that to a 23-25 year old who is in graduate school and has no doubt he has the facts. If he lives more than a decade or three he will see new theories replacing old ones, new facts discovered, new timelines and branches in evolution. Pretty much everything.
One of the reasons I laugh when confronted with someone with unshakable faith in something like AGW. Astronomy, physics, geology, biology, medicine, all disciplines are constantly changing and being updated yet we supposedly know for a fact the APW theory is so factual, and important that notable academicians have stated things like Non believers should be treated for mental illness, they should receive no service from the fire department if their house goes on fire. Plenty of absurd things have been said by people who really did mean what they said in defense of a theory where there are more strong emotions than proven facts.
That's what happens when you mix science with politics.

I know, and speaking for myself,it is hard to roll with the changes as they go,and accept them, contrary to what I have been taught that pluto was at the time called a planet, and now it is not.Pluto does not meet certain criteria to be considered as a planet, according to Scientists.Personally I still consider it a planet.

Pluto is a Planet
This is not just a sentimental point, there are scientists that disagree with the IAU decision to call Pluto something other than a planet.

I was wondering how long it was going to take for someone to make a Disney joke!
Personally, I always wondered why Pluto was considered a "pet" by Mickey, but Goofy, who was also a dog, was a walking/talking buddy of Mickey's.
Seems like subtle dogscrimination to me. Ditto for Pluto, the planet.
