Spyderco Military: Moving the Clip
Spyderco Military: Moving the Clip
I'm thinking about picking up a Military; however, I do not like the clip position/tip down carry. I'd like to move the clip. Has anyone tried to drill and tap G-10 - with this small of a hole, and if so, any suggestions?
My other option is just to get the Para-Military, but would prefer the larger Military. Thanks.

Thank you JNewell. Yes, I was doing some research and the problem is no liner in that part of the handle. The inserts may work. I may be ok with where the clip is though. I'd have to get one and use it a while to see. I have actually never seen one in real life. The other Spyderco's I own I carry tip up, so maybe tip down would not bother me. Thanks again.
+1. I actually miss the old style millie tip down clips on the Para now. You get used to it very quickly.Evil D wrote:On a knife this size, i've come to the conclusion that tip down is the way to go. This has been discussed quite frequently and I'm certainly a strong fain of tip-down carry, carrying my Blue PM2 that way right now.
There may be circumstances where it makes sense to tip-up so if a person wants to put a clip on the wrong end so to speak, they can use the tiny inserts as has been mentioned or they could simply use longer screws and put a plate behind the G10 inside of the knife. I believe there is plenty of empty space in there clear of the edge of the blade. The factory curved clip would not work well on the wrong end so a different clip would be required anyway.

Agreed. The nature and size of the Military lends itself towards tip down much more so than tip up. Tip up on something that big just makes things awkward when positioning your hand.Evil D wrote:On a knife this size, i've come to the conclusion that tip down is the way to go. Yeh, now that's the word I was looking for. Tip down on longer knives.Evil D wrote:On a knife this size, i've come to the conclusion that tip down is the way to go. With tip up you have to shimmy your hand up the handle to reach the hole and it's real fiddly. You'll adjust to tip down in no time.

I like mine tip down too except for those that don't have that option.
On the ones that I do carry tip up, I sometimes manage to get the skin of my hands snagged in between the place where the blade tip and handle slabs meet when closed. This usually causes the skin to get cut whilst the blade opens inside my pocket. Don't wanna risk getting cut down there.
This is not an issue with Spyderco designs. I simply end up using a right hand clip knife in my left pocket causing that knife tip to be exposed. Since my preferred carry is right side, I don't swap the clip to the other side.
I do feel for the left handed folk who prefer left hand oriented blades. They miss out on most sprints and exclusives etc. more than that, it is hard to get 100% performance on a right hand oriented blade if one is left handed.

:spyder: Centofante3 (C66PBK3), ParaMilitary2 (C81GPCMO), Endura4 (C10P), GrassHopper (C138P), Military (C36GPCMO), Perrin PPT (C135GP), Squeak (C154PBK), Dragonfly 2 Salt (C28PYL2), Military M390 CF (C36CFM390P), R (C67GF), ParaMilitary2 CTS-XHP (C81GPOR2), Tuff (C151GTIP), Ladybug & Perrin Street Bowie (FB04PBB)being the newest.
Speaking as a left-handed fellow, I've actually been really happy with how well Spyderco tends to do with making LH-friendly knives. The only sprint/exclusive I've got that being LH has been an issue for is the M390 Military - and it's the clip, not the lock, that bothers me. PM2 is great for LH. Any lockback is great. Of course, there are always a few that will be problematic - for example, the upcoming Brad Southard flipper has only RH clip and the lockbar partially covers the hole for LH use (the flipper mitigates this, but the covered hole is an issue on some other models).KardinalSyn wrote: I do feel for the left handed folk who prefer left hand oriented blades. All in all, Spyderco designs just generally seem to be LH friendly a good deal of the time, and I've actually wondered for a while how the percentage of lefties on this forum compares to the general population - it wouldn't surprise me if it was a bit higher.

+1 for me too on larger models like the Military, Police, Ulize, etc.. Plus, when no one is looking I like to flick open my knives for grins. But my favorite way to do it is with my middle finger, not thumb. A tip down placement of the clip makes flicking with the middle finger much easier on large knives.Evil D wrote:On a knife this size, i've come to the conclusion that tip down is the way to go. Blind nuts are probably the best way to secure the clip if you decide to move it and, FWIW, any hobby shop selling radio control modelling supplies should have 2-56 blind nuts in stock.
None that I'm aware of, or at least none that came that way from the Spyderco factory.JudasD wrote:Are there any versions of the military that have a tip-up carry option?
