JNewell is right. Specs are something that someone typed up on a webpage form and are not legally binding. They've been entered incorrectly before. If it's a question of law, then the length would actually be whatever method the law enforcement body decides to use to measure it, unfortunately.

Replying to the last two posts, the other and probably the most practical thing I'd worry about is that the person who measures the blade on the street, in real life, may come up with a measurement that differs from what you or I or someone at Spyderco would come up with. Let's be honest, we're talking about, what, 5/100 of an inch? Right or wrong, that is a razor-thin :D (sorry, couldn't resist) margin for legal safety. :o

The other thing is that specs like that a nominal. Real life blades may be slightly shorter, or slightly longer. You could get a knife that was easily 1/8" or more above spec.

No manufacturer has any liability over your actions. That would be like blaming an ammo company if you shot and murdered someone and saying the bullet was more lethal than it was supposed to be.

Anyway, most laws are "limit" or "over the limit" laws, so if the law was "not over 3.5" or "3.5 inch limit" then you'd be fine. You only have to worry if the law is "over 3 inches".

Ahh gotcha. Nothing over 3.5" is my local law. Though in my area of the state I don't have to worry about blade length unless I was waving it around in the local walmart :P
Summary: Nothing over 3.5"
Max length: 3.5"
A longer blade may be legal, but it's subject post-fact to a judge's decision.
Relevant laws: Statutes mentioning "knife"
Statutes may refer only to concealed knives.
Quirks:
A "knife" is defined as having a blade over 3.5". A pocketknife under 3.5" is not a knife.
Local restrictions:
Linconln
Switchblades are illegal.
When I first got into Spyderco's, I ordered my H1... didn't read the blade length for some stupid reason. Oh well, it's my "at home" knife know :P

I wanted a para 2 but was nervous because of the length. NJ has a law that doesnt give a certain length to stay under, but states in so many words that you need to have a "good" reason as to why you're carrying it (without a lawful purpose).

when i saw it was coming out in orange I decided to pick one up.
