Tenacious - Sharpening with SharpMaker

#1

Post by JohnTaylor »

I have the SharpMaker and while I am brand new to sharpening knives I have used it get my kitchen knives much sharper. I recently ordered a Tenacious plain edge and know that at some point it will need to be sharpened. What angle should I use on the Tenacious with the SharpMaker? What other tips do you have for this combination of sharpener and knife?

Thanks in advance!

first of all welcome! and second of all I would opt for the 40 degree setting on the sharpmaker to be pretty sure you are hitting the edge because usually spyderco's come with a factory edge of about 30 degrees inclusive. If you want the best cutting performance then you might try the 30 degree setting but the only way to be sure you are hitting the edge is to mark the edge bevel with sharpie and make 1-2 strokes on both sides then look and see where the sharpie is wiped off you can see if it is too high and not hitting the edge or if it is hitting the edge.

Use the 40 setting and touch up often.
We would rather be the knife in your pocket, because is "works" better, than the knife in your showcase, because it "looks" better.

40 will be your best and easiest bet. Love the sharpmaker, I just touched up my new PM2 for fun, only a few strokes with the fine sticks and wow, hair popping sharp. Just keep it touched up to keep it easy to maintain.

8cr13mov is a joy to sharpen just use the 40 degree setting & keep it sharp. Shouldn't take more then a few strokes with the fine rods.

Thank you so much for your rapid responses. Being so new to Spyderco products and sharpening in general I am certain I will have more questions. So, please be patient with my novice-ness. (smile)

Don't worry there are many people who enjoy helping people get into spydies and the knife world in general. I have learned quite a few things off of here that I wouldn't have known otherwise. The only problem I have noticed is once you get into knives(spydies especially) there is no going back.... :D ...... :spyder: :spyder: :spyder:
