The average knife user, will buy a Gerber and tell you that you are crazy if you buy a knife over 50 bucks. If you are into high end knives, you are not an average user.Jay_Ev wrote:Because the interests and desires of the forum members don't represent the interests of the general knife buying public. I can only speak for myself, but as long as Spyderco isn't asking me to pony up to cover the costs, I figure why the do what they do on their own dime is none of my **** business.redyps04 wrote:Haha! I like that quote too.
I guess another question I'm attempting to bring up is why in the world do some knives which almost have no backing at all and sell horribly as a result (like the White Goddard Sprint, no offense to Wayne himself) come out of seemingly nowhere, while forum members clamor for other sprints which never end up seeing the light of day? Even though I'll be the first to say that Spyderco gets a lot right, a lot of the time, I do think there seems to be a bit of disconnect in the area of sprint runs for some reason or another, and I guess I'm trying to understand Spyderco's selection process regarding sprints. The Dodo eventually got a revival, if for nothing other than pure mob rule. But for the most part I look at some sprint runs and have to wonder where in the world they came from. I can't be the only one who wonders this, right?
Beyond that, from where I sit, I'd say we get an incredibly large percentage of what we ask for, especially if you ignore the requests for things that we've been told time and time again are just not feasible, like US steels in Japanese models, changing country of manufacture, and full flat grinds on H-1 knives. I suspect some of the others involve requests for steels that are either not available at all, or only available with a minimum purchase quantity far in excess of what Spyderco might be willing to risk investing in.

I also think that it takes time to get over a discontinued product. Some of the knives we want so badly (which vanished 2-3 years ago) Spyderco had to dump the prices of to move. Khukuri's at $75, Barong's at $85. Captain $85.
Some of the sprints and forum influenced models are pretty amazing. S90v stuff, hawkbill ladybugs and others that most companies wouldn't approach on a poker night bet. :p

Exactly. And if you're an average user, you're probably not very interested in small, specialized productions (a.k.a- sprints) as well.thelock wrote:The average knife user, will buy a Gerber and tell you that you are crazy if you buy a knife over 50 bucks. Regarding Lava,
IMHO in order to appreciate the the knife, you need to hold it at least once. I never liked it until I got it. To my shame I even passed on the Forum knife, because I didn't like the Lava, but I was fortunate to buy it later. I really love it now. Most likely it is little on expensive side, but It is made in Japan and using VG10, which is not a bad deal, at least in my book.
Regarding White Goddard Sprint, IIRC suppliers messed-up. The knife supposed to be PE and not CE. I bet in case of PE sales would be quite different.

Please, keep in the mind that Spyderco moderators participate in more than one forum, their research is much wider. As much as I love and respect this Forum, I would not rely on it to sell sprint. Especially Japanese made, which are in most cases larger than Golden made and until recently were 1200 pieces minimum.redyps04 wrote: I guess another question I'm attempting to bring up is why in the world do some knives which almost have no backing at all and sell horribly as a result (like the White Goddard Sprint, no offense to Wayne himself) come out of seemingly nowhere, while forum members clamor for other sprints which never end up seeing the light of day? I'm wondering if people in this thread really want to pay so much for a Lava sprint.
I got my Lava when SFO had clearance on them. I paid $90ish for my stainless version. If G-10 is going to be more expensive, are people really going to be willing to pay that much for it?
How expensive do we think this Lava sprint is going to cost?

I think it would be around the same price as the sprint Dodo, probably even less. That is acceptable, for a sprint run.Donut wrote:I'm wondering if people in this thread really want to pay so much for a Lava sprint.

When Spyderco went from stainless to G-10 with the Poliwog, it was more expensive. And no, not many people were willing to pay more for it, that's why it didn't last long in the lineup.Donut wrote:I'm wondering if people in this thread really want to pay so much for a Lava sprint.

The discussion here seems to be along similar lines (going from stainless model to G-10). I'm guessing it would be in the $160 range.

I could be wrong but, assuming G-10 and VG-10, I suspect MSRP would be somewhere between that of the G-10 Dragonfly and that of the G-10 Small Persian. Probably closer to the later than the former, so say around $110 to $125 street.Donut wrote:I'm wondering if people in this thread really want to pay so much for a Lava sprint.

All depends on how I will like it. Make scales from purple/dark green or even black micarta (polished G10 may be will do the trick) and I will have no problem to shellout $125, unless I completely broke at that moment. The Deacon wrote:I could be wrong but, assuming G-10 and VG-10, I suspect MSRP would be somewhere between that of the G-10 Dragonfly and that of the G-10 Small Persian. BTW, I got SS Lava for $65 shipped at Sierra, but I didn't like the knife than.

I don't think it would be more expensive than the Dodo, which has better steel, better lock and it's made in Golden, which should add more to the price, right?

Which has a street price around $120-$125, so I think you're probably right, although I can't say I agree totally with your reasoning. Where locks are concerned, "better" is a matter of opinion. Personally, I find naked ball bearing locks a real PITA to release, so IMHO, they about the worst ambi lock made while midlocks are the best. But that's really neither here nor there, the pertinent question would be the relative cost of each to manufacture. I have no idea what that is, nor do I know the relative costs of S30V and VG-10. I do know Sal has said having anything made is Japan costs 1.25 as much as making it here, and that the conversion rate favors the Yen right now.thelock wrote:I don't think it would be more expensive than the Dodo, which has better steel, better lock and it's made in Golden, which should add more to the price, right?

The Lava is also a collab model, which would add to the cost as well. The Dodo isn't.thelock wrote:I don't think it would be more expensive than the Dodo, which has better steel, better lock and it's made in Golden, which should add more to the price, right?
