Sage II

#1

Post by gull wing »

This post is about the Sage I but I have the I, II, & III.(not extremely excited about the IV) I actually have two sage I's.

I take the "II" out now and then on sort of two a week carry when I have need of a thin, strong, not too big knife. I still like it better than my small Regular Sebenza, which I seldom take out. What a great knife! It doesn't feel slick like some of the all titanium knives I have.

Thinking of getting another Sage II, or a IV???

Since pictures speak, here are some quick shots of mine. You may not see it but I re blasted the slab on the non-lock side because of the scratches. I thined the blade a tiny bit to make it a little more of a slicer. Finished with hand sanding and lite stonewash. A sweet knife the Sage II. ;) Lockup is just over half way. TOUGH! Wish they were also in CPM M4!

I would personally get the IV; I am not the biggest fan of the back lock, but the knife is great.

I currently own the I,II, & IV. They are all great

I was less then thrilled about the back lock making it's "come back" in some Spyderco knives. But after seeing it for myself on the Native5 , I am a HUGE fan. The attention to detail and the exact tolerances just scream quality. The lock up is ultra solid and inspires confidence instantly. I imagine the same can be said for the back lock on the Sage 4. Not to mention the beautiful look of the Ironwood handle with titanium bolsters. Truly awesome.

I have never been a fan of the Sage 2 (even though I own one). It's just too "plain Jane" for me. And I do not care for frame locks at all. But to each his own.

Anyway , I would choose the Sage 4 hands down if I were you.

All the Sages are well built knives, so it really comes down to a matter of personal preferences. Sage IV is my favorite, and the only one of the four that I've carried, but being left handed and not caring for peel-ply G-10 made that an easy choice. If I were right handed, I think the choice between the Sage I and IV would be a difficult one.

I love the Sage II and next to the GB, probably my favorite Spyderco. I agree that it is kinda "plain jane" but that is part of what is so appealing about it to me, nothing flashy, just all business with some subtle things that a knife afficianado would appreciate. The size for me is great and the blade shape not too intimidating to use in the office environment around other people. People in my work place would freak if I whipped out a Millie or even a PM2! The grip is positive and as stated not slippery as one would expect. I personally would love to see another in the Sage series with M4 steel, compression lock and G10 scales. That would be sweeeet!

I would love to see the profile of your thinned sage vs a regular sage, did it make much of a difference as a slicer? I find my sage pretty good as a slicer.

Yes a thin handled knife is a big deal for me when I'm not wearing jeans, being a small person the "II" fits.
Can't take pictures today, but I took the blade down to .015" at the sholder, that is between the Calypso Jr and Sages. (Jr -
.012", Sages .020") It makes a difference.

Sage I and II are among my all-time favorite folders.

III is nice.

Trying to work up enthusiasm for IV, although it does look much better in vids than in the catalogue photo.

Deacon, is this the same lockback as the Chaparral? How would you rate f&f with say, the GB?

Don't know. Nobody's posted photos yet of one disassembled and I have no intention of taking mine apart.

Don't own the GB, so I can't really say, although to me the Sage IV looks better only because proud liners never look right to me. Can say it's every bit as good as the Sage I, II, and III, the Chaparral, and the Terzuola SlipIt.
