I own one of the old Viele serrated blade folders from the early '90s; it is a wonderful knife, with very lively deployment action: the blade springs from rest with a mere flick of the thumb. But my idiot cousin "borrowed" the knife on Christmas day and managed to use the poor thing to slice wire--deep scratches in the blade near the tip were the result. Question: will the Spyderco factory in Golden polish my blade back to perfection (for a fee, of course)? Thank you for your consideration, and happy 2012 to you all!

Welcome to the Forum, Highlander. :)

Sorry to hear about your Viele. :( That is certainly unfortunate and sad. If I were you, I would certainly send it in to Spyderco and have them take a look. Either way, they will be able to tell you if they will be able to repair the blade and at what cost. (Don't quote me, but I believe it will cost you about $25.00 + shipping to have the knife sent to Spyderco, not counting the cost for repairs. Perhaps you could talk your cousin into paying for the repairs? ;) ).

Either way, good luck.

All the best,

~Michael

This is exactly why I do not let anyone touch my things. Really sorry to hear about this. I would definitely make him pay. Spyderco should be able to help you out as mentioned. Best of luck; keep us posted

hey highlander,
welcome to the forums.
i would definitely give the crew a call about your knife.
and i would definitely ask your cousin about helping you out on the cost.
the veile was my second spydie and i cherish the thing. i rarely carry it any more for fear of damage, but it is still one of my favorites.
i always carry a beater d4 so if anyone asks to borrow a knife i don't have to worry about one of my precious edc's getting all messed up.
good luck in getting your knife back into pristine shape.
later,
don

Easy solution... Keep your knives razor sharp and make sure everyone knows it. I find most are kind of "afraid" of my knives and would rather ask me to cut whatever it is. Not foolproof, but it's worked so far.

Cheers,

Ken

Very very true, most folks seem to be afraid of very sharp edges ;) My experience is the same :)

Contact :spyder: and see what they can do for you on the Viele :)

Welcome Highlander, you've come to a good place :)

Funny you say that.. My wife asks me if I can sharpen one of the kitchen knives for her. She says "just sharp, not Kyle sharp"

Send it in. Be sure to explain what you want done and provide all your contact info. Send two checks with it, one for $5, one for $20. Spyderco may be able to restore the blade for the cost of a regular sharpening, in which case they'll return your $20 check with the knife. Otherwise, they'll fix it and send it back along with your $5 check.

Welcome, you already got a lot of expert advice. I would agree that sending it in would be your best option at this time.

This is why I never, ever loan knives--or much of anything else. If someone sees my knife and asks to handle it to look it over, I have them hold it over a soft surface (couch, whatever), admonish them not to drop it, and don't let it leave my sight. Not loaning things is a great way to maintain healthy relationships. I don't care if they think I'm knuts.

Man, that really sucks! If I let someone borrow something, it is because I know, that they know, that I really love my stuff! If I even have an inkling, of a thought, that my stuff would not be treated with the TLC that I give it, forget about it!

Hopefully your knife will be taken care of.

I am most grateful, gentlemen, for your thoughtful advice! The knife will be sent to Spyderco this week, along with an explicative note, and the two checks which The Deacon recommended.

Thank you for your generous words of welcome. Have you noticed how we of the knife and gun fraternity always behave tastefully towards our fellows, whilst the peace and love crowd violently resist everything that makes this country great? Your elegant responses to the plight of one sad dumbass who should have known better are indicative of warm hearts and proud spirits--bless you fine lads!

Welcome to the Spyderco Forum and enjoy your stay here. It's a bummer what happened to your knife. The Viele has attained the cult status and I am sure Spyderco will do everything to restore your knife as close to its original state as possible.

I have the same exact knife and I feel for you. Although I didn't loan mine to my cousin, he would do the same thing if I did loan it to him. Yours isn't named Eddie is it?

I sure hope Spyderco restores it to good shape for you. Let us know the outcome...
