Was cutting a box up today with my Dyad Jr. It suddenly dawned on me what a formidable weapon the full sized Dyad would be with both blades open and gripped in the center. The warnings say never use this knife with both blades open. I would hope that none of us will ever have to use a knife in self defense but like the American Express line, "I never leave home without one".
I grew up in Brooklyn, during the fifties and sixties, and we all carried the same knife - the "K-55" from Solingen.
Invariably, some of these blades had their actions filed down, to make it a good gravity knife.
I used it once - the distinctive sound of the blade locking open gave me the two steps I needed to make my getaway. Who wants to chase a guy with an open knife?
From there, I started carrying a large closed end wrench along with some knuts and bolts. These items were a lot easier to explain, if things got nasty.
Now I live in Pennsylvania, which is a "shall issue" state. Now I bring along my two friends - Smith and Wesson
While I make light of this subject, being afraid is a very real feeling. However, the solutions being discuused here a very serious. Avoid confrontations whenever possible. Descretion is the better part of valor. Maiming or taking someone's life is the absolutely the last course of action.
One way or the other, you pay for your tools!

Living in an urban/semi-urban enviroment. Using your EDC knife for possble self defence, isn't as crazy as you thnk.<img src="wink.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0>

As already mentioned, "get training", make sure the training includes fighting on the ground because many times the fight will quickly become a ground fight. Also document all training recieved in the event you do end up using the knife for self-defense. I highly suggest a trainer which matches your own carry knife rather then a trainer which is offered with a dull blade, you need one which is the same as your EDC.

IF YOU LOVE YOURSELF AND YOUR LOVED ONES , YOU WILL CARRY YOUR "SILENT COMPANION" AND TRAIN FOR YOUR ENTIRE LIFE. TO QUOTE ONE OF MY TEACHERS; '' IF YOU'RE IN A FAIR FIGHT, YOU DIDN'T PREPARE WELL ENOUGH.'' IT'S NOT TO THE DO WHAT YA GOOTTA DO THING SO MUCH AS IT'S THE DO WHAT YOU THINK IS RIGHT DEAL.
