Looking for a 'running' knife

Even that would be worthless when the cat dropped out of a tree onto the back of your neck. I guess they could identify the remains by running the serial number. LOL

Any Salt would be a great idea. I run with a E4W clipped in waistband. The VG-10 does just fine.

The Ruger LCP that rides right next to it does get some rust, though, especially on the mag release.

I always carry a Dragonfly Salt when mountain biking, and its great!

Its clipped to a pocket, and so light I don't even notice it. I love the corrosion resistance of H1. If you forget to rinse it (for a month :D ) its no big deal.

If you want something bigger and heavier, I think a Salt 1 or Pacific Salt is also a good option.

That's a waste of energy, just lugging it around. Mountain lions are easy to kill. That's one reason they're ambush hunters. I met a guy who killed one easily with a 38. He's a rancher and was checking a spring when he flushed a herd of deer. The lioness that was stalking the deer started making a move on him. Turned out she was old, skinny, and starving. Desperate, in other words. Had she decided to ambush him at the outset he'd never have known what hit him.

When I run, I want the lightest knife with the biggest blade. A heavy knife bounces around in my pocket and can be annoying. I carry it in my shorts pocket so I don't worry too much about it getting sweaty. Unless you carry the knife against your body, you should not need to worry about it getting wet or sweaty. Unfortunately, I have not found a Spyderco that can top my current knives for running, the Al Mar Eagle ultralight and the Benchmade 530. Both are super light, slim and have a good sized blade. However, if I had to choose a spyderco, I would probably go with an Atlantic or Pacific Salt, not because they are H1, but because they have no liners and are pretty light for their size.

I ran for years...pepper spray works great on dogs...but I would still carry the knife for other things.

I run a fair bit. Mostly in town before work, but I prefer out in the country. When I run trails from home I carry either a VG10 delica or a small fixed blade in kydex pocket sheath (Falkniven WM1, or Blackjack Necker, occasionally Spyderco Streetbeat). No rust problems - just wipe it off when you get home. I'd rather have VG10 edge-holding vs H1 edge holding. I like at least 3" blade and 3.5" handle for full grip, plus easy open if a folder. Low weight is important for no bounce, comfort, etc.
you guys that recommend larger firearms must never run with them :)
For impact, a 2 AA flashlight is an ok compromise between length and carryability.
If you want to defend yourself vs a mtn lion, bring another person.

I have Pacific Salt and Spyderhawk in H1. I made a kydex neck sheath for the Salt and I was delighted to find it also fits the 'Hawk and my other Endura-based knives



I don't carry knives for self-defence but this is a convenient means of carrying a knife for me.

When I ran at nights (nice and cool and no other pesky runners on the track) I carried a SPOT with a photon light on it. Worked great for me, the black coating held up well and it did come in handy that time in the fall when I fell and got my shoes tangled up in branches and foliage debris.

The Salt 1 is my standard travel knife and I find it easy to wear when hiking, running and swimming. The XL opening hole is a great plus in opening when you're tired and sweating. :D

Yeah, the good thing about H1 is that I could wear it clipped when swimming... and I like the size of the hole on the black bladed pacific.

Still pondering a bit. I can pick up a slightly used/carried SE E4 and perhaps use that one (and make a decent user out of it) or try and save some and get a black pacific later...

Bad thing is, this E4 will only set me back 40-45 euros, while the pacific is around 100 over here.

I'll probably go with a 'salt', if not for the steel then because of the nice sized opening hole...

On self-defense: the knife may be there 'just because' (because I can..?). Because not carrying a knife makes me feel naked nowadays. Even a SAK suffices, if I cant carry a :spyder: (when in class for example).

You don't need an X-Frame for cats. Mt Lion are dangerous because they are well armed, they are actually fairly fragile but very agile.

They do not kill that quickly and some have successfully fought them off by hand but had very bad wounds from it. They try to go after the neck and head and try to cut off your breathing.

A J-Frame .38 Special is adequate.

I've been running with a Civilian clipped IWB to my running shorts for years. It's gotten plenty sweaty hundreds of times and still looks great. I just rinse it off now and then and keep it oiled.

Oh, and a Fox Labs 4 oz stream in my hand and a Glock 20 SF with Double Tap 125g, Barnes solide copper @ 1600fps.

The PistolWear has a mag holder that makes a good place for a knife, but I like on my shorts for the sake of consisteney.

Salt 1 with serrated blade is similar to a delica that is lighter weight with a thicker blade. I like mine. It might work for you. If you don't like yellow or black, the yellow frn handle takes dye very well. Mine is a deep green after a soak in royal blue rit dye.

I think a knife will do you little good against say, a german shepard (maybe if you carry a Warrior, but good luck running with that ).

In case of most 2 legged predators, combine your running with another great work out: Practice Krav Maga. Fast growing in Holland, and very, very effective.

I've never been put in the situation, but using a knife against somebody.. I don't know if I have the hart for that. Maybe only if everything else failes. But it's going to be a bloody mess! It will definetly be my very last resort.
