engraved serial numbers (vs. printed)

My endura has a serial # printed on the blade. I have seen some spydercos with collector numbers actually engraved on the blades and handles. When did they start printing the #'s on the blade rather than engraving them?

Actually, I believe it's laser engraving.

A guy I met at work had a wayne goddard junior in micarta with what looked like a hand applied autograph of goddard himself, the knive also had a printed serial number,I do not remember the number but I believe that it was one of the very first production models, like goddard signed the first 10 or 20 production models himself, I have never seen this before or since, the guy was not a knive person, so I dont think it was a fake, I sharpened the knive for him and offered to buy it but he refused because it was given to him from his father who had previously past away, he did not know where his father got it and his father was not a big collector never the less he later lost the knive shortly thereafter, what a shame. Can anybody shed any light on this?
