One Para-military is not enough!

#1

Post by Reject »

Love the Para-military, love the way the whole package comes together and I especially love the compression lock.

I EDC one, but I must admit it is not a knife I can take very where or take out to cut something when there are a lot of people around. I’ll use the Sage or a Dragonfly and for some jobs and environments a smaller knife is just better. Then there are days when I just need a big knife and wish my Para-military was a bit larger like the Military.

:( Why can’t my beloved Para-military be smaller or bigger or both?

:D Yes I know! You can’t please some people. You give people the best productions in the world and they will still complain.

But I’m a Spyderholic! :spyder: I want more!

I don’t want just one Para-military, I want Four.
In four different sizes!

And I don’t just want four different knives that look like the Para-military. I want four knives that are the Para-military, the same balance and the same feel and work exactly the same.
When I change from one knife to the next, I don’t want to have to change anything I do in taking it out, opening it, closing and putting it away. The only difference in them would be the weight.

I want an EDC that is so familiar to me, that it becomes part of me, I don’t want to hesitate very time I take the knife out and close it again, to remember which knife it is and how it works. I want the only hesitation to be when I choose which size Para-military I want to carry that day.

 Did I hear someone say it can’t be done?
That if you change the size of a knife it will never be the same?

I think it has already been done!
I think Eric has done it with the Ambitious, Persistence, Tenacious and Resilience.

Spyderco say they were all individually designed, but each difference in design seems to have brought them closer together.
If your hand knows one, it knows them all.

My impressions of them are, (I am guessing here so please correct me if I am off the mark) that it was the design intent, that these four knives feel as if you can change size of the knife you carry without changing the knife you carry. (If that makes any sense)

If it can be done with the Ambitious, Persistence, Tenacious and Resilience, could it be done with the Para-military?

Look at these and imagine they are Para-militaries

If you can; get hold of these four knives and see that you think.

I think they should turn Eric loose on the Para-military to see what he can come up with.

:D But that’s only what I think.

PS. If you would like to chuck in some carbon fiber and titanium, that would be nice too.

:o I think I will go and lay down now.

I'd be all about this, but i doubt it'll ever happen. I think the inexpensive nature of the Persistence clan is partly why they were made possible.

How awesome would a Chaparral sized Para 2 be??

Hey Reject, I'm on board !! My first Spydie was a Tenacious, which I loved the look, feel, solidity, and especially price of. But it was more than I was willing to drag around every day, so I sold it to my brother and got a Persistence, which I liked even more, yet still didn't carry much ( though I still love that size & weight). I eventually (very recently) got an Ambitious, which is also very cool.
I recently acquired a Native 5, largely because it was basically a high-end Persisitence, so it seems that size/weight range is where my head is at. I'm considering a PM2, but I'm afraid it'll just become my favorite letter opener.
( Of course,on the other hand, if they drop the PM2 down to a 3" blade, then it pretty much, for all intents and purposes, becomes another Native5/Sage/Persistence/etc.)
Hmmmm, now I'm confused......... :D

( But, I tend to agree with Evil D, that this is unlikely, regardless, so it may be a moot point.)

I would love to see a mini pm2, in fact something like that is certainly on my "grail" list.

I agree with Evil D, about the size of a chaparral. It would obviously have to be a bit thicker to support the compression lock but that's okay with me!.

I've noticed there is a complete lack of smaller knives with the compression lock. What's the reason for that?

I am with you on that one, the PM2 reigns champion. I have way too many already and as long as there are more to come in production or sprints I WILL HAVE them all!! NO REALLY I WILL HAVE THEM ALL!

After a quick look at the Spyderco web site the only current knives with compression locks other than the Para-military are the Jojimbo and the Junior.

In the discounted models they had a long run with the Salsa which was a small knife and the “S” model before.
So a compression lock on down sized Para-military would be possible.

If they can use the compression lock on a Vesuvius, then they could probably make a Dragonfly with the same lock.

There are several pictures in my mind on this.

The compression lock on the Para-military seems to me to be the safest system for closing a knife there is and I think more people cut them selves closing a knife an opening it.
It is also starting to get a reputation for being one the strongest locks out there.

I see a child being given the smallest of these as first knife, then others as they grow and their needs change. I think they would become knife to be past through the generations.

The one knife person! The person who wants to keep things simple and only wants to buy one knife in their life. But it’s a different world out there these days, if you get a knife that is small enough to be legal to carry everywhere, it will to small to be useful for the larger cutting tasks. This one knife in different sizes would give options.

If you carry a knife all the time and it is always the same knife, you don’t have to concisely think about using it. It just happens. To have four different sized knives and still be able to maintain that ability, seems like a little piece of heaven to me.

Ditto. That Para is the perfect size. If I need anything bigger, I have the Millie.

Absolutely agree with mr. Glesser Para is perfect sized knife. If you want smaller or bigger knife there is plenty of choice in Spyderco lineup, but almost none of them have comp lock. Maybe a Sage 5 will have it.

Hey Eric, great to hear from you. I had never given any thought to different sized Para 2.s, but I think that Reject is on to something. I think that if you took a vote, the Para 2 would be the favorite all-around Spyderco for most. (my opinion anyway) So it would be interesting to see a size variety. I'm in for sure. I am anxious to get a Military 2 now. I have said that my favority knife would be a cross between the two, in other words, revise the Millie to match the Para 2 modifications.

Thanks for all of your great design work Eric, we all appreciate it. Happy holidays and take care.

Reject, I think your Spyderholism is starting to rule your life again - time for more treatment :spyder:

A smaller Millie, that's a brilliant idea. One of my favourite designs, but a bit too "tactial" to EDC. If we can get a Dragonfly size Millie, that would be my #1 EDC work knife (my SS Dragonfly has been retired after 2 years due to blade play :( )

Would you call it a Mini Millie? :D

The bruises haven’t cleared up from my last treatment session yet. :(

My name is Reject, I am a Spyderholic; I haven’t had a new Spyderco knife in 3 weeks.

:D But Ron is sending me a new Des Horn soon. :D

 I will try to be good until then.
