maybe work hardening at play? i know it's very real with the H1 steel, but not sure about the others...

I've sharpened all my spyderco's right out of the box. Didn't even check the edge.

I usually do too, maybe i'll use the factory edge for a day or two but once it won't shave anymore it gets reprofiled.

Here's a odd one...my Kopa abalone/pearl! I could not believe how sharp that was.

For me it was the Spyderco Street Beat... that thing almost cuts air molecules as you wave it around. Out of my folders, I'd have to give it to the first Delica 4 FFG (green) that I got; I also have an orange one and that one was noticeably less sharp than the green kind, which didn't matter as I brought it up to speed with Tri-angle. My resilience is also ridiculously sharp, as are my Endura 4s... and the Manix 2 is a brutal cutter... ok they're all great, lol.

Lots of ZDP-189 popping up in this thread.

I will add to that -

I've noticed that too. I suspect the higher end steels require more attention to detail when sharpening and may yield sharper edges as a result.

Other than the knives with exotic steels (ZDP, XHP, CPM-M4), I would definitely say the Zulu. The blade is wicked sharp S30V with a wicked high hollow grind.

ZDP-189 goodness.
Yeah Jay Ev I can certainly give you a big "high Five" on that one. I've yet to ever get any Spyder as sharp as that ZDP Burgundy Caly jr>> and believe me I've had some really sharp Spyders too.

I also remember a VG-10 version of the JD Smith that was also hair poppin sharp as well. But the Burgundy Caly jr with ZDP is still champ in that arena

Which Catcherman? Was it one of the older/thicker AUS-8 models or was it one of the MBS-26 models?

Two for me. The ZDP-189 Caly Jr. (burgundy sprint). And the Cobalt Mule.

Just the barest touch of the edge on either one would curl up a little flap of skin on my finger.

The Cobalt Mule had a much toothier edge though. It would catch and dig in so easy I had to be extremely careful taping it up while shodding it with scales...
