The Spyderco Hole

#1

Post by Bert T »

I believe it was the Deacon that said he was boycotting Benchmade for using the "hole" idea that Spyderco originated. I can't fine his post. Would someone please explain again why Benchmade can use this idea. Thanks.

I believe they use it because it's a darn good idea ;) The reason they can use it has been hashed out on other forums. If you try a google search, you won't come up empty-handed. Bottom line, Sal had a great idea, and we celebrate that here without denigrating other knife companies. :) , Shiny footprints and all...

I believe the issue is that they licensed the use of the hole, and the license ran out and they continued using it anyway.

I think it's no different than a Chevy bow tie or the Ford oval...it's a defining characteristic of the brand (not to mention it's patented anyway) so when other companies use it, it is pretty tasteless. How hard is it to use an oval instead?

Because they can.

Spyderco didn't patent Spyderhole. They patented detent for opening and patent is expired. Spyderhole is a trademark of the company.

Sal would prefer if this issue were not discussed here and I do my best to honor his request. Shortly after he made that request, I posted my feelings, and the logic behind them, on the main page of my personal website. That information is still there today.

Sorry fellows if my post came across as trying to bad mouth another brand, or you all thought I was trying to start some kind of argument. I was merely wondering about the patent issue and wondering if Spyderco had given given Benchmade permission to use it if it was patented. No problem one way or the other. I own both brands of knives and both companies make good knives. However, Spyderco is my favorite. And for what it is worth I think the Gayle Bradley is the best designed, best constructed, and prettiest folder ever made.

I don't think you came off that way. We're just respecting Sal's wishes and keep this and other negative comments regarding other manufacturers off this forum. :) No worries, man.

I'm glad you posted the question cause I was wondering the same thing.

I also went to Paul's homepage and I read his reason for the boycott, very informative website.

A side note, I am very jealous of Paul's small collection of spydies! :D
