Native 5 torn apart...
Native 5 torn apart...
There's a thread where other users are discussing Native 5 stiffness.
Here's my take on it.
Got mine a few days ago. Mine was stiff too when opening, but after flicking it, it got better. The opening hole was sanded waaaay too smooth, I couldn't get a grip, you know what i mean. Had to use a small round diamond file to make the hole sharp again.
Then I decided to take it apart, (avoiding warranty, yes i know. I do take many of my users apart, just for the heck of it, and to polish the moving parts etc. So far I've got them all back together, and fully functional too :D . ), to see if there was something wrong with it. Nope, nothing wrong. I guess the stiffness has something to do with the self-closing feature, the backspring is really heavy duty, and it's a bit different than say on a Delica. Also, there was plenty, and I mean plenty of lube used from the factory. I guess they've noticed the stiffness too.
As I had the knife all butchered, I took the time and polished every part that I could see making a difference, and put it back together. It opens and closes smoothly now, but it still is by no means a light flicker.
All and all, I like the Native 5; small, and plenty strong. Hefty. Me likey.
anyways, here's some pics for your viewing pleasure, I olny had my mobile phone at hand so the pics are bit crappy. But at least you can see the inners of the thing, without having to butcher yours

Check out page six of "my precious". I wanted a Micro-Manix, but since Eric still isn't making one, I had to do it myself :D :DTheMelonPopper wrote:Lets see more of that manix! What did you do to it?

Thanks a lot for these pictures, very nice work.
That rounded corner suggests to me that it wouldn't snap into place as loudly, but peoples' descriptions of the Native suggest that it does snap into place loud.

Dates on the blade always, but in a spot that you can only see if you disassemble the knife.Gollum wrote:Dates on the blade now?

You're showing off all of our secrets
I'm sure any of you engineers out there can appreciate what our engineers have done.

If you want me to remove the pics, I’ll do that in a hearbeat.
I thought of this a bit before posting, but I figured, that if someone wants to find out the secrets, they’ll just go out and buy one, and do some reverse engineering.
I’m no engineer, but I can see what makes the blade do it’s thing, the self-closing. Simple, yet genious. Not that it's simple to do so, that it works. I bet that it took time and effort to get it right. But you did it. My hat’s off to the Spyderco crew, this is why you guys are on top of the game, always re-newing, improving, and doing little, subtle changes for better. You guys Rock!

JT , those pics of the Native5's "internal organs" are great. It's interesting to see how everything works in my (current) favorite EDC. Yes , the engineering wizards at Spyderco have (IMO) outdone themselves yet again. . They are the masters of their craft and have made it into an art form. Spyderco 4 eva !!!
Phew! you had me there for a while Sal.sal wrote:Hi JT,
The pics are fine, I'm just teasing. I think it's a good thing for knife afi's to know what's going on in their world of knives.
