Dragonfly 2 Sprint Run, what would you want?, whats possible?

#1

Post by DCDesigns »

I absolutely love my Dragonflies! I think this model is due for a sprint run, but Im really not sure what that might be. I know there are already ZDP -189, and H1 variants (I own them), but what other steels would be a possibility?

I have heard the Japanese consider it an insult if foreign steel was suggested for a blade made in their factory. Is this true? Think they'd be "down" for a sprint with another country's steel? If not, what other Japanese steels are up to snuff? A super blue d'fly would be interesting, but with the Caly 3.5 just being released, I would think it would be a while before we see super blue pop up again in a sprint.

What would you want? What steel, what handle material?

I just want colors. I'm sure most people would love to color match their DF with their endura/delica.

As a seki knife there isn't much steel to choose from. Super Blue might be a possibility...but so far that would probably be about it.

The Dragonfly could be improved by rounding the sharp edges: the steep angle at the top of the thumb ramp, and the sharp point at the end of the handle. I guess these changes would probably be a part of a re-design rather than a sprint run.

If you're not a fan of carbon steel, or vintage stainless, the selection does seem fairly sparse compared to what you'd have to choose from on a knife from a less fanatically nationalistic country.

Super Blue with G10 colors. Maybe white? Or blue of course lol. But idk Im feeling white because the super blue steel makes me think about ancient japan, cherry blossums, and purity. White is pretty pure. Think it would be awesome.

This is what I meant. Japan will not use other countries steel. And so far the only steels that we have seen recently are the VG-10, ZDP-189, H1 and the Super Blue. And with the exception of the SB all have been on the DF already. So what does that leave?

I am sure that there are other steels, but the questions is, will Spyderco want them on a knife, will there be a cost factor, is there enough available to do a run of knives without having to wait a long time for it to be produced etc.

Personally, my dream knife would be a D'fly with carbon fibre scales. I'm not a fan of FRN or G10. The steel is secondary, Spyderco always uses good steels as far as I'm concerned.

I would pick up an H1 Dfly. I liked the lime green color from another thread.

Orange handles came to mind when I read this.

When was the last Spyderco that came out with Micarta scales?
