Tip Broke off my Delica 4

#1

Post by jotobo »

No clue how it could have happened. I use it to open mail and cutting fishing line for the most part. Never stab it into anything, ever.

Now its just got a flat stubby tip. Its a decent little piece thats now missing.

Is this common?

Mine's been through quite a bit and still looks good. I carry the Delica everday and it gets used hard.

I've got a native however that is missing it's tip. Can't blame the knife--I was being stupid and realized it too late.

No it's not common for "reasonable use". Some opt for the saber/hollow ground if they know it will be in for a workout.

What were you doing when it broke? Kinda hard to speculate without specifics. Pretty hard even then as all steel is slightly different as are people's definitions.

I did nothing that Im aware of. I just took it out to look at the edge on my knife and noticed the tip was gone. I havent sharpened it in a few months because Im not that good at it. And there the tip was, or rather wasnt. Like I said, I use it for mail and cutting fishing line. It gets light use. I can not think of any motion that I used or use that involves any action that would result in the tip snapping off. Poking into an envelope couldnt do it. I poked into a bubble wrap type manila envelope recently and thats the "toughest" thing its been used for.

Its a complete mystery.

It sucks. I love that knife, its my EDC. But without a point it severely limits its usefulness.

Just stumped. I have another knife in 154cm that does get some abuse and its fine. Im fairly new to Spyderco so Im not sure if this is a common thing that happens with VG10 or what.

Never heard of VG-10 just falling off like that. It's an excellent steel that likes to roll or bend more than chip or break (within reason, that is). Seems most tips that break result from drops on concrete or tile while open or twisting and prying. There isn't any chance a "buddy" used it for anything, is there? I put my Delica though 7 years of hard work and it never had a problem (it's ATS-55, but VG-10 is a much better steel). All my other VG-10 knives have held up very well.

I'm assuming it's a flat ground model. Is it?

Something had to have happened to remove the tip if it snapped. It would take a ton of use to wear it away (like cutting a TON of cardboard or tile). Im surprised you didn't notice because I freak about microchips and burrs personally.

No it's not a vg10 problem. You might look to buy models with thicker edge geometry. Manix2, Gayle Bradley, etc.

Tips don't usually just break off by themselves. Maybe someone "borrowed" it when you weren't looking and used it to pry something? I've never had any part of a blade go missing without a good reason (like dropping it :( ).

I agree with the folks. Most people think a knife tip is a great awl. Stab, twist, etc.

It's a major strain on a precise slicer in any steel.

Nope, no one borrowed it. It stays in my pocket 99% of the time. Which is why I have no idea how it happened. I work in an office so its not used for work.

Blerv, I recall someone saying FFG or Saber doesn't matter. His theory was that since both types are equally thin at the tip, the grind won't matter when it comes to tip snapping.

This doesn't sound normal at all. Send it in and they will take a look at it, might as well take advantage of their excellent customer service and lifetime warranty.

Id suggest spending $2.50 and getting a piece of 220 grit wet/dry, you will get the same finish and can get the tip pointier than factory :D

Good God! I hope the tip on my D4's won't just fall off. I have one with a slightly rounded tip but that was due to my stupidity while using the Sharpmaker. I sometimes stab my knife in a tree(I know, bad idea) just for kicks but had yet to break a tip. :D

Tip on a saber grind delica is pretty **** stout, now I'm curious on what happened, though I'm leaning toward somebody borrowed it without you knowing.

Take a magnifying glass, look at the surface where the the tip broke off (and don't stab yourself in the face). Is it a uniform satin color, or can you see any rust/large particles/bubble?
