Where did you get your last Spydie from?
Where did you get your last Spydie from?
Since there have been a few heated threads here lately, I thought I would start a simple fun poll. I'm curious to get a feel for where people get their Spydies. And so it is in that spirit that I present for the public this simple poll.

Sadly I have to admit that I have not been buying from my local shop. I just can't get over the costs. They have really great prices. But the fact is that I can get a knife shipped up here to my door for less than what a knife in the shop costs, before taxes are added! There have been times that including shipping, I have saved about $10-$15 before taxes, and about $50 after taxes. I really want to support my local, but I just can't afford to at those prices.

same here! but the places to buy them either don't know what the knives are really worth or don't care (I think its the second one)... $80- 100 Delicas/Enduras... $170 Para2s... $200+ miltaries... $130 Manix2 and even $50 persistence... those are just a few I remember off the top of my head from the couple places around town that carry :spyder:DeathBySnooSnoo wrote:Sadly I have to admit that I have not been buying from my local shop. I hate having to walk away after holding the knife and wanting it so bad... but then again the wait for it in the mail is always worth it once it comes :D

I'd say 60% of my knives are bought of the forums like knife-bst, bladeforums, CPF, JD Forums, etc.
Also, buy from ebay quite a bit.
My latest buy, a Caly Jr ZDP189 came from JD Forums.

Yeah those are not good prices. There is a place near me, pretty decent prices, not great but not horrible. But then I need to add 13% tax on top. Even if they give me a deal (which they usually do) it still adds maybe 5% to the cost. But if I order form a place like CS, the price is $20-$30 lower, a few bucks for shipping..and I still save minimum $20. Buy 20 knives a year and that adds up!ValueKnifeLover wrote:same here! but the places to buy them either don't know what the knives are really worth or don't care (I think its the second one)... $80- 100 Delicas/Enduras... $170 Para2s... $200+ miltaries... $130 Manix2 and even $50 persistence... those are just a few I remember off the top of my head from the couple places around town that carry :spyder:

Most of mine come from online dealers. I'd love to support local BM stores, but the prices are too high. I wouldn't mind paying an extra $20 on a $100 knife, but the reality is that a $100 knife online is closer to $160-170 at the store. I don't have a ton of disposable income, so I have to get the most for my money. Don't get me wrong, I understand they are different business models (one with far greater overhead due to maintaining a physical store front), but one of those models just doesn't do it for me. Sure, I can't inspect the knife before I buy, but at the cost savings of ordering online (plus knowing Spyderco backs their knives against defects), it's worth the very small risk of having to spend an additional $5 to send it in for repair or exchange. If I take into account the cost of driving to the BM store, their near or at full MSRP prices, plus CA tax rates, if I shop online I can almost get 2 for the price of 1. That's just too large of a gap to me.
I've also picked up some good deals on eBay and B/S/T forums. The only ones I get from SFO are Mules and forum knives (and that one time they had $50 T-Mags).

Got my USN Catcherman at Spyderco
The most recent Spyder I've bought I've gotten from the good folks at the Great Spyder Factory. It was the USN version of the Catcherman. I'm still taking it out of the box and checking it out. I've actually bought quite a few items from the folks at Spyderco.
Long Live the SPYDEREDGE Spyderco Hawkbills RULE!!
I guess I should have split up the Knife store/ online vendor category. I also can't remember the last time I purchased a knife from the local store. I'm one of the lucky ones who lives closer to SFO. I like to go in every now and again and get my hands on all the new knives. Then I can go to CS or whomever online and pick them up as cheap as I can.

Just a matter of timing. For the past couple years almost all of mine have come from NGK, but my most recent purchase was the USN Catcherman.

I would love to go to my local...but here is an example. My bday gift of a SB Caly 3.5 got here today. Bought from an online retailer, including shipping came to just under $135 USD. My local has it at $165 CAN. So about $30 difference, and that is before taxes. So if I paid full price plus taxes that would make it about $186. So a $50 difference in price! That is far too much...$15 sure I'd buy from the local, but $50, just can't do it.

I've only bought knives on the internet. I don't even know where there is a knife store close enough for me to drive to. I know it would be close to 100 miles or farther. I might as well drive to Golden. :) I'd walk into the store in Golden and say "Do you have any Benchmades?" They don't have bouncers there do they? I'd love to have a knife store close by. I'd want to support a local store to show appreciation for the ability to handle knives before buying them. I'm not saying I'd get every knife at a store but I would get some. How many would depend first on price, then on how much I liked going into the store and the people.

I bought my last one from a BM store... but it was just a Kiwi slipit. Whenever I want a relatively inexpensive knife, I bite the extra cost bullet and hit the local knife shop. After all, I want them to stay in business... too few knife shops around these days as it is... so I am obligated to give them a portion of my business. Unfortunately, if I want a knife that has an MSRP over 150$ or so... the extra cost is too much, so I go online. I feel that I make up for it by having them do some of my knife sharpening when I get too behind on it. :D
Don't hit at all if it is honorably possible to avoid hitting; but never hit soft.

I'm a bit spoiled in the fact that I work 5 minutes from the SFO. I know I pay more there than some on-line retailers, but I get to (1) handle any model I want to make sure it is what I was expecting. (2) Once I decide on a particular model, , I can personally inspect the very knife I will be taking home to ensure there is absolutely nothing wrong with it.
My last knife that has arrived was the brown Millie bought from an online store. The Chaparral should be here in a day or two. Also from on online store.

Do you go to S&R? If so then pay in cash and also if you know what you're looking for before you get there look at the prices on their ebay store. When they quote a price tell them their bay store is selling it for such and such and they will give it to you at that price. I know what you mean though. Even after all that they are still a bit higher than some of the online stores.DeathBySnooSnoo wrote:Yeah those are not good prices.
