Knife Sharpening Service

#1

Post by Stephen »

Hey everyone, I have several non-spyder's that need some sharpening and was wondering if anyone knows of a forumite or other person who will do this for a fee (or for free :p :D ). I'd sharpen them myself but am unable. Any help is appreciated.

LOL, I could probably get a brand new Endura for that much cash. Not to mention customs problems. If NZ is anything like AUS I might as well just toss my knives into the gulf.

I'm pretty sure Spyderco has a sharpening service.

I'd probably be up for doing it if you covered shipping. What kind of knives?

You can do Richard J from bladeforums, I think he charges $1 per inch of blade. Everyone speaks very highly of him and he sharpens using paper wheels.

Richard introduced me to paper wheels and helped me learn to use them. I've been using them for a few years and I'm very impressed with the results. And Richard has 10x the experience as I do so I'm sure you'd be happy with his service.

NZ is waaay less strict than oz, we can carry 4 inch locking blades, even assisted and ship anything in except things like balis, autos and proper gravity knifes. :D

I just have 4 or 5 knives that need sharpening. There's a SOG Trident, CRKT Bearclaw, CRKT M16-13.... I can't remember the rest, I'll have to look when I get home.

Thanks for the info guys, I'll think about it. Although I'm not sure I can pass up someone offering to do it if I just pay shipping.

I can manage my spydies, but when I will need to sharpen my Gyuto Murray Carter will be my first choice.

While it is true, Spyderco has a sharpening service for Spyderco knives, the original poster was asking about non-Spyderco knives which Spyderco does not offer to sharpen.

Just thought I would bring that point out again.

I thought about doing it for free also except for shipping (as long as you don't have hundreds of knives  :D ). I'm thinking NZ stands for New Zealand? If so, do you have electricity and grocery stores? Do you have to shoot something for lunch? Sorry, just kidding. :p :)

But for sharpening service, a basic charge for just a sharp edge is about $1 per inch I think. I would think $5 minimum even for small knives though. That would be my policy if I were doing it. If you want a polished mirror edge the charge would go up I think because it takes more time. But there are several people on this forum who would be glad to help out and not charge anything.

The only reason i'd have him do anything is just to satisfy my curiousity...i have to someday feel how sharp a samurai blade smith can get a Para 2 :D

From his youtube videos it looks like Murry Carter sharpen by hand on waterstone, so explains why it's more expensive.

Still you'll probably get one of his apprentices sharpen it, not him.
