Cheap Effective Karambit
Got this for $7 at Smoky Mountain Knife works. Obviously it is a cheap import, but the action and lockup are solid (I have muddled them slightly trying to take this thing apart - not recommended as screws were stripped during manufacture), the knife has a nice sharp edge (also have temporarily borked this so I could work on it - removing the decent stock black coating and regrinding the edge), there is a nifty built-in seatbelt cutter and the ergos, karambit action and overall design really surprised me. I feel confident that this will be an excellent SD EDC blade for at least a reasonable amount of carry time before failure and that's if I use it for non-SD purposes as well.

You know, just cause it's cheap, does not make it ineffective, would I trust my life to carry it as a primary,....prob not....but then again many a Wal-Mart special in the Kitchen aisle, have been used effectively in crimes, and they are the cheapest of the cheapo knives....So one never knows...If my assailant had one of those cheapo Karambits I wouldn't just stand around waiting for it to fail before I attempted to defend myself, and if it was the only thing I had for defense, I'd keep stabbing even after the blade fell off the handle if I needed to. So whose to say what is trustworthy...and what's effective for SD...Sure some knives are better suited for the task, but a knife is still a knife anyway you cut it, even if it is crap by one persons standards. I give you the point on the kitchen knives, but thats technically a fixed blade, few things to break. I had a cheapo kbit before and I trashed it, was good for dirty cutting, but I appreciate the natural amount of fingers I have, so for SD carry its a no-no. Same with you, you seem to carry (and always did) quality blades. Its similar as carrying a Ruger or Sig instead a die cast Hi-Point, although both can fire a shot. In question between no weapon vs. any kind of weapon on the side of the defender, of course having a cheap knife is better, but all I am sayin is carry the best you can have, `cause its your hands, your health, your life.

My usual EDCs are a Navaja and a Spyderhawk Salt, BTW. This would be a backup and seems suitable. Will keep messing with the lock until it fails probably, and if it continues to hold up this well for a while I may just keep modifying it until I destroy it, or lock it open permanently.

I've heard a saying "the best kinfe in the world is the one you have with you when you need it" and I stand by it one thousand percent I have many a knife that sees little edc or "sd" carry but in a pinch I feel is up to my lowest standards or requirements I should say (as I live in a rural area and tend not to leave it much and I know the possibility of crime or assault is possible.....but I digress) the karambit by sheer form alone is an awesome cutting tool and if his primary were to maybe be knocked away(by his I mean anyone) all he has to do it get a finger into that ring and go to gross motor skills and he's got a better chance than empty hands just my input I suppose but we all would love to have a miracle steel superknife that would cut like a lightsaber but alas the katana EDC went out a long time ago ha ha ha
