New Wave Knives?
New Wave Knives?
Any chance that we will see some new spydies with the emerson wave feature? I'm thinking FRN spyderhawk wave... :D
Hawbills customized with the wave have always looked awkward to me, since it's a straight cut above a curved blade. But then again if it was drilled so that the top of the blade has a curve matching the edge, I don't think it'd work well because the peak would push the pocket away, and you'd have to curve your wrist as you removed it to make sure it'd catch.
I don't really care how it looks. It's all about the function for me. :)phaust wrote:Hawbills customized with the wave have always looked awkward to me, since it's a straight cut above a curved blade. I would not go that far... I would not put my life on it. In the event the knife is used in a self defense role I want the best of the best and something I know will work each and every time. Where with the zip ties you need the right size, and position it just in the right place. They can shift and etc.phaust wrote:Well then why not ghetto wave it? I have an endura 4 wave and pacific salt with the ghetto wave, and both work equally well :)
Now if you ment "ghetto wave" in cutting into the spydie hole then disregard the above haha.
Yeah that's what I meant by it.224477 wrote:I think ghetto wave means the zip tie method. They move, and they look odd, thats the problem. And last but not least, they are not reliable.
Mine hasn't moved, and I use it every day on my edc (also it's never "misfired"). It did take me a few tries to figure out the best method, though. I have mine on the top of the jimping so that it digs in instead of sliding on the slick metal (alternatively, grip take underneath wherever you want it works). I push on it with my thumb when I use the knife, and it doesn't go anywhere. Also, I use a zip tie with a metal piece inside to lock it in instead of an all-plastic one. Every all-plastic one I tried (I had maybe a half dozen types on hand) wouldn't tighten enough and lock in. I've also read of people melting them so that they fit exactly, which might also solve the problem (I haven't had the need to try it).
On the other hand, I misfire with my waved endura every so often, unless I loosen the pivot enough that there's more vertical play than I like or pull it out pretty hard, which I wouldn't want to rely on myself doing in an emergency situation. If I had a waved endura 3, I'd definitely prefer it over the ghetto wave and waved endura 4, but I also prefer my ghetto waved pacific salt over the true-waved endura 4 because I don't have to choose between vertical play and ease of waving.
In case it helps, here's a picture of the positioning of my ghetto wave (please pardon the crappy webcam pic):

Or, as an alternative, you could have Steve Rice (STR) wave one of the new H-1 Spyderhawks for you. He's licensed by Emerson to do that. He also has his own sub-forum on BladeForums if you want to see his work.

My M2 with a zip tie works better than my D4 wave.
My Captain opens when I say the word "wave", Lol.
I think most the people who knock the zip-tie haven't tried it or loosely put one on and didn't tweak the finishing process enough. It's really quite effective.
PS: For the record, even the "Wave" is not 100% effective for 100% of the people. It can not quite open the blade on occasion but with practice it's almost a sure-fire way to open a knife quick. At the least, it opens the knife 50% which is a flick away from locked. The same goes for the zip-tie.
It's not like Emerson blesses the patented hook with mystical black magic. Ooga booga....

Thanks for the idea Deacon. I send quite a lot of things to Steve :p The only problem I have with this method is that I lose my spyderhole, right? The Deacon wrote:Or, as an alternative, you could have Steve Rice (STR) wave one of the new H-1 Spyderhawks for you. Hawkbills on another mission
Not just the Spyderhawk but other Spyder Hawkbills as well  This is a great idea>> however it's one that needs a serious test driving from an experienced Hawkbill enthusiast>> Hmmm? I wonder who we could get for this important mission  It will be a very tough job but I'll volunteer :DSecSpyral wrote:Any chance that we will see some new spydies with the emerson wave feature? Just the looks of such a creature would make any would-be villians take off in the opposite direction. That would have a very ominous and scary look to it as well.
The more I think about it the wave option would have been great on the Superhawk model.
Long Live the SPYDEREDGE Spyderco Hawkbills RULE!!

No, there are some abortionists out there who do that, but Steve isn't one of them. He doesn't cut into the Spyderhole, he just adds a wave notch in the spine. Not as deep as the ones Spyderco does, more like the ones on Emersons. Of course that may not be doable with every Spyderco model, but it wouldn't hurt to ask.SecSpyral wrote:Thanks for the idea Deacon.
