This Old Sage

Post by 5.56 »

Well it's not that old. Sal gave it to me almost a year ago, but I've been tinkering with it.
I'm sure most of you have seen antiqued Sebenzas, so why not a Sage 2?

First, the blade was sent off to So-Lo here on the forums for treatment. If you follow his channel on Youtube(solosknifereviews), you'll know that he recently began modding knives.
So-Lo sterilized the blade, then stonewashed it using a method that he developed that creates a fantastic antique look.

While the blade was away, I began the scotch-brite treatment on the scales. I lightly smoothed out the edges of the scales to give it that worn look. When the blade returned, I sharpened it to a 30 degree inclusive polished edge.

Here she is, I'm really impressed with the way this turned out, I love this sterile antique look. :D

Here's a nice shot showing the sterile blade and Randy's(So-Lo) antique stonewash.

Thanks for looking

I like it!! I don't have a sage yet, but I'm sure I will soon. Can't decide between the 1 and the 2.

Wow that's a really nice combo! It makes me want to get one just to do a similar job!

The stonewash "washes" out the etchings. It looks better in the end if you sterilze the whole blade.

You do notice that the whole blade is naked, don't you?

That looks really cool. If I had another Sage 2 I'd like to mod it. Possibly anodizing it, maybe giving it that worn look like yours.

How does the Scotch Brite process affect the overall feel/purchase on the Ti scales compared to the factory finish?

I've never handled a Sage 2 but I would guess that the Ti was quite slick originally.

The Sage2 handles are beadblasted and they do offer some grip.

When I scotch-brited them, I made sure to leave centers of the scales untouched, so they aren't slick.

I like the look of the scotch brite treatment on Sebenzas, and it looks just as good on the Sage. I like the stonewashed blade too. Very nice.

Scotch-Brite is miraculous stuff. It's amazing how many types of cleaning/very slow abrasion it's just THE perfect thing for.

The Sage 2 is quicking becoming my favorite of the three. That looks fantastic.

Have there been any concerned with the lock tab wearing like with the Military? Any talk about a steel insert?

Beautiful knife and beautiful work.

VERY IMPORTANT QUESTION!
Are you going to carry/use it?

What do these terms mean?
Sterilize (are you a surgeon?) :)
Stonewash
Any other technical term dealing with what was done to the knife.

Jack
PS edit: Nevermind explaining stonewash. I just read the thread about stonewashing from toomzz.

It's in my pocket now. :)

Someone already answered correctly. Sterile=cleaned off all etchings

And I am an Optician, but I don't think I'll be using it on anyone's eyes. :D
