Finally bought a Sage CF!

Post by araneae »

After much lusting over this model, I finally broke down and bought a like new CF Sage on the bay. Hope its as described. I saved a few bucks over a nib knife, but this means I will be waiting on a chaparral for a while. Oh well, the Sage is sure to please. Had to share my excitement. :)

Now I wait for the mail man... Maybe wednesday.
So many knives, so few pockets... :)

Congrats on the Sage 1. The linerlock is great. The carbon fiber handles/scales are also very nice. The pillar construction and being open makes cleaning simple. Will serve you well.

I've been debating over the Chaparral and Sage1 ever since the Chaparral became available. Asked several questions here on the forum and finally got the Sage1 myself. Mine arrived Saturday. I've put the Chaparral on hold for a while myself. The Sage didn't disappoint at all. Opens smoothly, locks tight with no blade play at all, feels good, very sharp, perfect size for me. I also like the wire clip. It's my first one. It rides lower in my pocket than any other knife I have. Beautiful twill CF. Congratulations on your new Sage. I know you'll love it.

Am sure you'll be pleased. Sage I is the only RH liner lock I've ever considered carrying. Excellent design, impeccably executed.

I'm right handed and have tried closing the Sage1 and Gayle Bradley holding the knife in my left hand. I can slide the lock over with my thumb, then press the spine against my leg or something to close the blade. It's one lock typically designed with RH people in mind that isn't really a problem for LH people. I've felt a little sorry for LH people because there are lots of things made easier to operate for RH people and some knife locks are like that.

I just received my first Spyderco, a Sage 1 , today. Completely satisfied with it. Well machined and finished, CF scales are grippy and look great, opens and locks buttery smooth, blade is a thing of beauty and it is light and pocket-able with an excellent pocket clip what more could you want for under a hund. I too considered the Chaparral, but it was only a little smaller and looks like it could be the Sage1's little brother. The deciding factor for me was price, the Chaparral was at least 15 bucks more for a smaller version of the same knife. I can't see you not being happy with it.

Excellent choice for a first Spyderco. I just got one on Saturday. I was debating on the Chaparral or Sage1 also. Where I looked the Chaparral was about $4 cheaper than the Sage1. I chose the Sage because it is a little "beefier". Plan to get the Chaparral later. I also like the idea of the Chaparral line changing handle material and blade steel with each new revision. That could be interesting. If you had one with your favorite steel and another with your favorite handle material some people would swap the parts and have a knife with their favorite of each category. That would void the warranty though. I've thought about that and the only thing covered by warranty would be defects. If there are no defects you'll never have a warranty claim to have voided by disassembling it. If you have trouble getting it back together there are lots of people here to help you.

For me, I love the easy cleaning open back of the Sage 1, as well as everything else about the knife. One-hand opening and closing is sweet. Great quality throughout. Gift-worthy, IMO.

It's true that the size differential isn't that big. The big differences are the lockback vs. linerlock, and the Chaparral's significantly thinner blade stock.

The thinner blade was the final determining factor that made the difference for me in opting for the Sage1 (first). The thicker blade will always do as good a job that the thinner blade would do (for my cutting needs). But, there's always a chance that I'll be cutting something that the thinner blade may not be tough enough for. That brings up the subject of abuse. If a Chaparral blade snaps in two that would be because it was abused. It is possible to abuse the Sage1 and the blade would not snap when the Chaparral would because it's thinner. It is still abuse though. I'd have to say I never abuse my knives so that issue shouldn't have been a factor but it was. I always have the feeling that I may need to abuse a knife a little and I know Spyderco knives can be pushed past what would be considered abuse and still perform but they have to draw the line somewhere and prying or bending the blade sideways definately crosses the line.

I love the Sage1 but I'm still going to get a Chaparral. :D
