OT - Ying-Yang, collecting in pairs..

#1

Post by sam the man.. »

Esteemed Spyderfolks,

Do you collect your knives in pairs? I mean by having a set of knife of the same make and model in different variations such as plain edge and full serration or normal finish and coated finish? I have this habit to pair my knives other than Spydercos in that fashion.. for every serrated, there's a plain edged as its companion and for every satin finished knife, there's a black coated one.. sorta ying-yang thing to bring balance to the force.. oh well, here's what I really mean in the pix.. whatabout you?

I do collect some varients, mainly Crickets, Delicas and Police's.

The only standard model I have ever got was the Colypso Jnr Lwt, both in PE and SE. I've even been tempted to get a second Colypso Jnr Lwt PE just in case.

I am not a collector for the sake of collecting, but if I like a particular knife or pistol, I often get a "spare!" I have a of Ruger SP101 revolvers, a pair of Glock 22s in 40 S&W, and pairs of Spyderco Civilians and Harpies. Then there are knives and guns I have in trios... but that is OT. Some of the pairs and trios are identical, and others are different variants. Items I acquire, and do not actually carry, tend to stay "single."

Jeff> Re: MT LCC DA

I've had mine for a while, 2nd hand, custom work done already...

I find the lockup to be about the same as a , with the standard ~1mm of movement. The thing is built like a tank, and feels like it in your pocket. If I carry mine, it's in a spare leatherman sheath(only like $12-15, didn't get a MT sheath with it) on my hip... looks a bit odd having 2 on your belt, but it works. Love the DA, more of a convience than a need. Bought it for the gadget factor. carry mine tip down, spine forward in the sheath.

I don't collect edge variations in the same model but I have collected some handle material variations of certain models. For example, I have

Native - FRN, G-10, SS
Endura - FRN, SS
Delica - FRN, SS
Jess Horn - FRN, Micarta

Sometimes the different handle variations have different edges, but not always.

Similar to Rex G - go for the "spare" concept. If it's a really good thing then it's worth having 2 of.

howdy Mr Smith! ~ the MT LCCs are in a class of its own in terms of pricing, knife material and reliability. I procured the first batch with CF scales and Ti-bolsters. they are even better built than the actual lightfoot custom... later, MT had offered the knives in aluminium bolsters and micarta scales which kinda slacked a bit, but the following is still strong.. I have a pair of Lum folding tantos in satin and black finish.. the complement each other..

Yeah, I did that with some of my knives (actually they are the knives that I'm using). For example, 5 minutes after I received my PE Standard, I bought an SE on Ebay. Same with the SE Navigator that I bought in a shop. The next day I bought a PE on Ebay.

Couples:

- PE/SE G-10 Navigator
- PE/SE G-10 Standard
- PE/SE Alum. Cricket

Soon:

- PE/SE St.Steel Cricket

Not as a rule, I don't, but my current EDC is a PE Standard and an SE standard. I did the same thing with Calypsos, and maybe a few other knives.
