Manix2 Customization program?
I guess that the Manix2 together with the Para-Military2 is one of the most sold higher value Spydercos. As some of you may know, Benchmade offers a customize-program with their Griptilian. However, I'd like to stay with Spyderco. There are tons of different Manixes which were already made, showing that it is possible.
Why not offer different blade steels and different handle materials? Build your own Manix!

I think they have outsourced the customization to Tuffthumbz. Geoff has customized a ton of Manix 2's and Para 2's. The advantage of factory customization would be blade steel choice. The disadvantage would be if all that was offered was G10 color selection.
Here's the Manix2 Tuffthumbz did for me:

It's a great platform and prob one of the easier to mod. I would just buy the steel you want and have a custom maker/modder like STR do your dream to it. It's gonna be more expensive but the salad bar manufacturing method needs specific implementation (it would be literally another dept or sub-company).
That's actually a great idea for a particular knife model. You could go step by step, selecting your personal choices, much like building a computer at Dell or HP. Each step has the various choices with prices, so you click a box and move to the next step. At the end you get a total price and you can go back and modify when it totals up to about a grand.

Do you really think it would add up to a grand if you got credit for removing a base item in favor of another one?BAL wrote:That's actually a great idea for a particular knife model. I like the idea. Only thing is it might be a bit difficult for Spyderco to keep up with the demand. Not to metion they may be cutting out dealers or you're looking at one very high priced knife.
Perhaps if they shipped you the parts only, saving them the time to assemble the knife it could keep the costs down.

Me did already (on a small level). I have a Manix2 with M4 steel and tan G-10 scales. Also, I had the black G-10 scales w/black 154CM steel. I made a blue and orange sets of G-10 scales. So I could have either knife with original or blue or orange G-10 handles.
Very poor pictures some may have seen already. Only black blade pictured.

My work is not perfect buy I'm just starting (if I continue).
I think the idea is a great one. Spyderco may not want to get into it but I bet there are 3rd party folks who would love to take it on. If someone starts with a particular model the first or second knife will give the start. After that, the work would be much faster and better I think.

The grand thing was a joke, albeit not too funny. If a system like this was set up, there would have to be a stock pile of parts already made and then they could be re-manufactured with the demand of a particular blade type's / handle type's popularity. When an order is made, it would then be a matter of putting the knife together by grabbing each part out of a bin according to the order. I am sure that it would create problems that we can't imagine now, since we are looking in from the outside of construction. It was just something to think about. Who knows, maybe it would work.Slash wrote:Do you really think it would add up to a grand if you got credit for removing a base item in favor of another one?

I think it would work but like you said I have no idea what kind of inventory storage and other stuff it would creat for Spyderco.BAL wrote:The grand thing was a joke, albeit not too funny. Better yet, if they had all the parts in bins waiting for an order, I could place an order and they just ship me a box full of parts. Then us goofballs could be assembling our own Spydercos.   They sell knife kits like that on Jantz.com and other companies I'm sure. Something tells me Spyderco folks would NEVER go for that. Homemade Spyderco knives in the world falling apart, parts missing, etc. :D I took my Delica apart and reassembled it so many times I had enough parts left over to make two of them. :D :D

That sounds cool, but the thing is that Spyderco is a tiny company compared to Benchmade, and I gather that Sal likes it that way. I doubt they have the capacity for something like this, and I don't think many would be willing to sacrifice the introduction of new models just for a bit of customization on an old(er) one.

Here is the thread where this was already discussed. Sal responded in post 22.
