Inexpensive knife for vacation in Chicago
I'm in Chicago for the week and I didn't bring a knife because I didn't want to check luggage. I know I could have mailed myself a knife but I didn't. There aren't any knife stores in Chicago as far as I can tell so I'm going to order something and have it here in a day. I'm keeping it under $50 and smallish, but I don't care about keeping in the 2.5" ordinance as I'm not concerned about being nabbed by the police in the one week I'm here. That said I'm including the Cat/Chicago knives. I already have a Dfly2 ZDP189 so I don't need another but I have been eyeing the H1 SE version.

The Cat actually complies as well, under 2.5". They were overly compliant with the Chicago model.wingman_214 wrote:Spyderco does offer a "chicago". Its compliant with the city laws.
I like the Squeak! Though the UKPK is bigger and fills my hand using the same FRN Slipit formula, but the Squeak is FFG which I prefer. Is there a way to add it to the poll???DeathBySnooSnoo wrote:Squeak maybe?

Sorry not to play by the rules, but the Squeak is my travel kit Spydie. Less than 2" and non locking. Would be hard pressed to find anywhere it is not welcomed...and it can only be 'gravity' opened by people who know howto do it. Its going with me next week to Seattle.

You are probably going to laugh :p , but I have borrowed a steak knife from a nice restaurant for a week or so when flying out of town. Make a make shift sheath from cardboard & tape. Then returned it unnonomusly on the last day after dinner.
Just another option. :D

Hahahaha. Inventive, but I have steak knives where I am. Steak knives have teeth but not an edge, so they're just tearing utensils. And I think you meant "anonymously" :)MCM wrote:You are probably going to laugh :p , but I have borrowed a steak knife from a nice restaurant for a week or so when flying out of town. I had a somewhat similar experience recently. Flew to San Antonio for vacation. I had researched ahead of time and decided to buy a new spyderco at a local knife shop. Between getting to the shop and finding a knife I wanted and then over paying for it...hassle to say the least. Of course I had to ship it home...had to go through a metal detector to get into the San Antonio post office. The guard had to escort me and my knife to the counter and the postal worker had to put it in my box for shipping. Still left the last day without a knife. (Sunday)
Got a good idea from another forum that I intend to do next time I travel. Buy a Swiss army knife upon arriving, and then gift it to somebody as I am leaving. (Hotel shuttle driver or the like.) I love my spydies, but if I'm not checking baggage, I can go without.

Seriously? Metal detector at the post office? Never new that existed.gdwtvb wrote: had to ship it home...had to go through a metal detector to get into the San Antonio post office. Gander Mountain in Kenosha WI near the Woodman's grocery store had delicas the last time I was there (couple of years ago). they were stainless, plain edge D4's in clamshell packs for around $50. There is a Bass Pro Shops in Gurnee IL that had a few spyders when I was there and there is another in Bolingbrook? near the Ikea. There is a gun shop in Joliet as well that had some spyders for decent prices but I can't remember the name. I haven't lived in Chicago for 2 years but never had trouble carrying a pocket knife clipped to my pocket. The CPD have bigger problems than an ordinary citizen carrying a pocket knife. I doubt you will be hassled. (I have lived in several urban areas, including the Boston area, Tampa, St Petersburg, and Chicago and the CPD are by far the most polite and friendly police officers I have ever encountered btw.)
Enjoy your trip, Chicago is a great city.
