It's a simple matter of people not being able to discern the presence of a pocket knife versus that of a sword; it's just a sharp scary thing that can kill them
To many people, a knife is a knife, is a knife, and there is no common sense applied to a situation like that. Folks can't stop and think for one second that you may be a "normal" human being who happens to carry a tool with a sharp edge on it, in your pocket.

It's worse that than, I've experienced a double standard that borders on the absurd. Some of my fellow workers would cringe at the sight of me using a 3.5" bladed folder in my cubicle. Yet they though nothing of waltzing past me carrying the 8" chef's knife or 5" utility knife which sat 24X7 on the "treat club" table to the restroom and back.1623 wrote:It's a simple matter of people not being able to discern the presence of a pocket knife versus that of a sword; it's just a sharp scary thing that can kill them

To them, those knives were tools, while my Stretch was a potential weapon. Most ironic considering that almost all knife crime among co-workers here is committed with kitchen cutlery.
The "look" also made a difference. More traditional bolster and scales knives, even relatively large ones like my stag jigged bone handled C83 Schempp Persian, drew less negative attention than a black FRN Native or Calypso Jr.

I've experienced the same reaction from folks around the office - but if I whip out a bright yellow salt or orange Urban/UKPK, I just tell them its a "rescue tool" or "fishing knife". Everyone seems OK with that...
I haven't tried the same thing with my orange Millie...

I really love the twill carbon fiber that is on this and the Sage. I just got my Sage today and the CF is just amazing. I saw some of the CF that tuffthumbz works with and it looks really good polished, but I really love this stuff more. It just feels clean and gives bit of traction.
Depending on how many are available in the first few weeks of availability I may be ordering mine.

I have noticed in office type settings that non-spyderco or non-knife people view knives much differently than we do. We think that the Delica is a mid-size maybe even smaller knife. Most people think of a pocket knife as a small 3-blade shrade etc. with the thin blades. I have had people think that the deilca was a big knife. Someone needed a thread cut off of a sweater once and I pulled out a Manix and you would have thought that I had whiffed out a John Belushi Samurai Chef knife. The Spyderhawk has people diving under tables.
Congrats on getting your Sage, you'll enjoy it.WalzAaronFFG wrote:I really love the twill carbon fiber that is on this and the Sage. I just got my Sage today and the CF is just amazing. I agree on the texture of the CF; I prefer it over the polished look and feel of my UKPK CF. The knives coming out of the Taichung factory are most impressive in my opinion, with an extremely high grade fit and finish.
I would expect the Chaparral to be no different in this regard.

Here is my secret on how to never use credit cards again. Max them all out and stop making payments. :D Pretty soon you'll never use a card again. :Ddschur wrote:FWIW, this morning Howes knife shop had 2 collectors clubs Chaparrals available, #030 and #031
Now only #031 remains :D and it seems my credit card has fallen victim.
Kind of off subject, sorry.

charity for me
I think most people could afford to donate to my favorite charity (me). $1 each toward a Chapparal is a very good cause. If all my friends give me $1 each that will give me almost $2. :D
I think the Chapparal may replace my Christmas gift which I was going to request a Sage 1 from Santa (unless I can sneak one in the house sooner :D ).

Looks that way. :Ddschur wrote:Just got an email from GPKnives that they have the Chaparral in now too. Looks like it is raining Chaparrals all over.
I just found a two hour old an email from NGK saying they have them as well.
They had 8, now they have 7. :)
