Ladybug too small?

#1

Post by ac12 »

I just got my Ladybug in the mail, and I'm thinking I should have gotten the larger Dragonfly2. Even with my small hands the Ladybug is difficult to open with one hand. I just can't seem to get a decent grip on the grip. Or I am just doing it wrong, or is it really a 2-hand opening knife.

I got the LB to downsize my EDC to something less bulky in the pocket than my current knife, which is 4-1/2" closed.

The LB is quite small. I can JUST open it one handed...but mine is like a back up, back up knife. I think that it is a bit too small to EDC very well unless you are just opening envelopes or similar tasks. The DF would be a fairly large step up in size even though it is still a very small knife and would I think be a much better EDC knife.

It is small, but mighty. I find it hard to open one-handed, so I did this...

A wee bit of a fob on the end lengthens the handle so it's right easy to open, and the lanyard isn't in the way, and just folds up in your pocket. Try it - it doesn't need to be fancy - just a bit of cord with a knot or two will do.

- best wishes, Jazz.

I don't think anyone should belittle the L'Bug, or at least the L'Bug ZDP. You should have seen the face on an engineer at my work when his cheepo 3" folder had trouble breaking down an 18" square box. L'Bug ZDP went through it in seconds and is still very sharp :D Enhance the edge a bit and it's a superb slicer :D Glad I got 2 :)

A L'Bug Salt SE has been on my keychain for quite a few months now with a quick disconnect fitting. It has only had to cut a few pieces of small rope and cord. It's still razor sharp and ready to repeat what what I did with the ZDP model.

One of the nice things about Spyderco is that all of these really interesting steels come in different packages. My L'Bugs are smaller and lighter duty than the larger knives, but still pack a **** of a punch. There's a lot that can be done with a 3 finger grip :D

I have fairly large hands, but I put one of those chains found on dog tags on the end of mine and use this to open the ladybug which makes it much easier I just slip my pinky through it.

I don't even work at one had opening with the L'Bugs. 2 handed opening is much more comfortable for me :) As long as the edge is there :)

I can barely open my Ladybug with one hand : the handle is not quite long enough, and the Spyderhole just a bit too small. So using both hands is in fact easier for me too.

I don't really see it as a shortcoming, though, but more like a - small - price to pay to have a knife that is so unobtrusive while still being very effective.

Wearing the Ladybug on my keychain (as most people seem to do) means I pretty much always carry it with me. And despite its deceptively small size, there's not much that can't be done with such a sharp blade... except of course when a longer blade is obviously needed.

You may need a bigger, more versatile knife as an EDC; and the Dragonfly certainly seems to be a good choice. But whatever you end up choosing, I think you should keep the Ladybug anyway. But to be honest, I think everyone should have a Ladybug...

I got a Ladybug Salt for my mom, who runs an urban gardening project. I figured there's always something she'll need to cut, and she won't want to deal with rust issues.

So far, she's loving it. She never knows in advance what she will need to cut, but she knows that she has a solution on her keychain.

As said above, put a fob on it. Makes it much easier to open one handed. And then go and buy the d'fly. Nothing wrong with carrying both :D

I EDC a Para 2, and carried a Para 1 for about 6 months prior to this. I have BIG hands, i can palm a basketball no problem. I've really fallen in love with the Ladybug...yeah it's very small, but it's just a matter of how you plan on using it as to whether being that small is a problem or an advantage. I wouldn't carry one as my primary EDC knife, but i think there's going to be one on my keys for as long as i carry keys, or until they stop making Ladybugs.

I love my Ladybugs because of their size. I almost always have one on me and with a little practice I got the one handed opening down. Both of mine have paracord lanyards on them though so that might help. What is the name of the knot on yours Jazz? I see them a lot but don't know what to call them so I can search for instruction.

I think the Ladybug is an awesome little knife. I carry one always. Like someone said it's a backup to a backup. My hands are large and I have no problem opening and closing it one handed. Its also a great way to try new steels, and cheap. My first ZDP and H1 knives were Ladybugs, also my first hawkbill. I actually prefer it over the D-Fly most of the time. Throw one in your watch pocket and forget about it. Also a great NKP knife.

No it is not too small IMHO.

However, yes it is too small to open one handed reliably.

You will be surprised at just what the Ladybug can do...

The dragonfly's edge is only 5mm longer than a ladybug, but the blade is wider.

I can open it easily with one hand and you can even use the "spyder drop" method if you snap it with some enthusiasm. My ZDP ladybug is the sharpest out-of-the-box knife I've ever had.
Don't mess with the Spyder because you think you're fly.

I carry one every day along with a Delica. The Ladybug I carry is one of the Salt versions. I use it when I need to cut something and I'm around people that I know might take issue with such a large knife as the Delica. Yes, I work with some of these people.
But I chose the Salt version to cut up fruit or anything like that. Yeah, it's small but it certainly will do the job.
