Wha Hopin??

When I put my Delica away last March or April it was very shaving sharp. Nearly, but not quite hair popping sharp. Today I got it out and it wasn't even close to shaving sharp. I hypothesize oxidation of the very edge where the relative surface area is high and the individual crystal elements of the metal are exposed on both sides as the likely explanation. Any comments?

steel relaxes over time. It is the same reason why you don't sharpen or steel right before you strop an edge. The results are better if the steel sits for a couple days before working farther.

I've only had one problem with an edge going on me, with my Cricket(Tufram ATS-55 SE) when I redid my PE tip. Had to come back and redo the final bit for it to shave again.

As VW said, the steel relaxing would be my first guess.
If a couple passes on a smooth steel or a couple stropping strokes on your jeans brings the edge back then you know this was what it was.

Carbon steels will definitely "edge-oxidize", leaving a duller edge. I doubt this is what happened with yours, as it's stain-resistant steel.

My bet lies with the others on steel relaxation. Give it a few licks on a steel or strop and it'll pop right back.

I guess we'll all have to start storing our knives under a pyramid in-order to keep 'em razor-sharp...(Remember THAT from the 70's?).

Good one, Dann,

The 70s? I'll go put on The Alan Parson Project's "Pyramania" for a little mood music to help you, Chuck.

Here's a little reminder from the Vietnam Anti-war days of the '60s that has nothing to do with the subject at hand for you and Allen.

The knives I keep in my pyramid come out sharper than when I put them in, the hole heals over, and they open themselves when I just think about using them!!!

On a serious note, a little strop action brought things back nicely. I,m going to have to start using a Tuff-Cloth on my blades before I put them away.
