Removing tarnish from S30V?

#1

Post by scatteredsage »

My Sage1 has developed some brown-ish discoloration on the blade, which appears to be some kind of tarnish/stain (I'll post a picture during my lunch break today). I've used the knife to break down a bunch of cardboard boxes and dice an onion (which I'm thinking is the culprit). I've tried washing the blade off with dish soap and a sponge, but no luck.

My questions: Has anyone else experienced tarnishing/stains with S30V? How can I get rid of it?

The only staining on S30V i've dealt with was from a price tag sticker that the knife shop stuck on the blade, the glue left a shadow in the steel but after enough handling/washing/wiping over time it eventually faded away. I can't really say what got rid of it..just persistent use i guess.

Yes, I've experienced the tarnishing and typically any metal polishing compound should do the trick. Some brand names: Metal-Glo, Simichrome, Flitz, Super

Try a little extra fine steel wool and a light oil. (0000 steel wool and machine oil, gun oil, mineral oil, even wd40 works in a pinch) This will take any kind of light rusting off quick and easy. Make sure you clean it well afterwords because any tiny pieces of steel wool you leave on will give you new stains.

Grizz

(PS this works great on guns and chrome too.)

As previously mentioned, Flitz polish is what I use. VG-10 will also get little stains from finger prints, etc, if not wiped off. Not a big deal, but I have removed them before using Flitz. Nowadays, I usually don't worry about little stains. Although I don't know if they are "brownish", more like just a little darkening of the metal color. If it's brown, it may be surface rust. Either way, some polishing paste, steel wool or fine sandpaper will take it off.

The staining may be patina (from the onion). Patina (as I understand it) is a type of corrosion that protects steel from rust. Do research on patina. I don't know much about patina especially on stainless steels.

Patina is just a fancy word for rust or corrosion ;)

0000 grade (super fine) steel wool will take off rust without marring the finish. I've used it on near-mirror finish (Caly 3.5), satin (GB, Military), and bead blast (Kershaw E.T.) blades, and with each, it removed the rust without leaving marks. A bag that will last your lifetime costs like $4 on Amazon.

Thanks for all the replies! I picked up some Brasso metal polish last night (closest thing I could find, bottle said it works on stainless), and the discoloration came right off. My Sage is gorgeous once again!
